<strong>the</strong> churches from which <strong>the</strong>y have received <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

stipends. * * * * And let <strong>the</strong> secular powers be<br />

warned and <strong>in</strong>duced, and if need be, condemned by<br />

ecclesiastical censures, what offices soever <strong>the</strong>y are <strong>in</strong>;<br />

that as <strong>the</strong>y desire to be reputed and taken for be-<br />

lievers, so <strong>the</strong>y publicly take an oath for <strong>the</strong> defense<br />

of <strong>the</strong> faith; that <strong>the</strong>y will study <strong>in</strong> good earnest to<br />

exterm<strong>in</strong>ate to <strong>the</strong>ir utmost power, from <strong>the</strong> land sub-<br />

ject to <strong>the</strong>ir jurisdiction, all heretics, condemned by<br />

<strong>the</strong> church, so that everyone that is henceforth taken<br />

unto any power, ei<strong>the</strong>r spiritual or temporal, shall be<br />

bound to confirm this chapter by an oath. But if <strong>the</strong><br />

temporal lord, required and warned by <strong>the</strong> church,<br />

shall neglect to rid his territory of heretics, let him<br />

by <strong>the</strong> metropolitan and <strong>the</strong> prov<strong>in</strong>cial bishops, be<br />

tied by <strong>the</strong> bond of excommunication; and if he scorn<br />

to satisfy with<strong>in</strong> a year, let that be signified to <strong>the</strong><br />

Pope, that he may denounce his vassals <strong>the</strong>nceforth<br />

absolved from his fidelity, and expose his country to<br />

be seized by Catholics, who, exterm<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> here-<br />

tics, may possess it without any contradiction, and<br />

may keep it <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> purity of <strong>the</strong> faith. And those<br />

Catholics that, tak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> badge of <strong>the</strong> Cross, shall<br />

gird <strong>the</strong>mselves for <strong>the</strong> exterm<strong>in</strong>ation of heretics, shall<br />

enjoy that <strong>in</strong>dulgence, and be fortified with that bolj<br />

privilege, which is granted to those that go to <strong>the</strong> help<br />

of <strong>the</strong> holy land.'<br />

work of exterm<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g heretics, were to wear <strong>the</strong><br />
