"Romanists <strong>the</strong>mselves, furnish conclusive evidence<br />
that <strong>the</strong> moral code of <strong>the</strong> order is most <strong>in</strong>famous.<br />
•, But to return to <strong>the</strong> subject of Roman schools:<br />
you have alluded to <strong>the</strong> zeal <strong>the</strong>y manifest <strong>in</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g<br />
up <strong>in</strong>stitutions of learn<strong>in</strong>g. Let me rem<strong>in</strong>d you, <strong>the</strong>se<br />
, <strong>in</strong>stitutions are considerable sources of <strong>in</strong>come to <strong>the</strong><br />
church. There is a nunnery near Bardstown, Ky.,<br />
located on a farm of several hundred acres, '<strong>the</strong> number<br />
of whose female boarders,' says Dr. Rice, <strong>in</strong> his<br />
lectures on Romanism, 'has averaged from one hundred<br />
to one hundred and fifty. The charges for each,<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g extras, would not be less than one hundred<br />
and fifty dollars. The annual <strong>in</strong>come of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitution<br />
is not less than fifteen thousand dollars. The<br />
outlay is small, s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>ir provisions are ma<strong>in</strong>ly<br />
raised on <strong>the</strong> farm. Almost <strong>the</strong> whole of this money<br />
is earned by <strong>the</strong> nuns; yet <strong>the</strong>y get no part of it.<br />
Their coarse fare and cloth<strong>in</strong>g is all <strong>the</strong>y receive. By<br />
<strong>the</strong> degradation of <strong>the</strong>se poor women, <strong>the</strong> clergy are<br />
enriched; and to make slaves of <strong>the</strong>m, was <strong>the</strong>ir object<br />
<strong>in</strong> so shamefully delud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m. Some of <strong>the</strong><br />
nuns are employed as teachers, some are house and<br />
kitchen servants, and some labor <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fields !'<br />
" Without murmur<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong>y do whatever <strong>the</strong> prie ts,<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir masters, bid <strong>the</strong>m do-and that without <strong>the</strong> hope<br />
of pecuniary reward. In referr<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> nunnery<br />
near Bardstown, Dr. Rice remarks: 'I know not how<br />
o<strong>the</strong>rs may feel, but it appears to me, that every<br />
Christian, and every .American, should set his face<br />
aga<strong>in</strong>st those prisons, where females are <strong>in</strong>carcerated
