Romish priests ask for a division of <strong>the</strong> public school<br />

funds? Protestants cheerfully submit to taxation for<br />

educational purposes, because <strong>the</strong>y regard education<br />

<strong>in</strong> itself a bless<strong>in</strong>g, as it unfolds and enlarges <strong>the</strong><br />

m<strong>in</strong>d; but Romanists esteem a purely <strong>in</strong>tellectual<br />

education, unmixed with <strong>the</strong> mummery and gross'<br />

absurdities of <strong>the</strong>ir religion, as worse than useless."<br />

" Do you pretend to say Catholics attach no importance<br />

to education ?"<br />

"To be educated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> doctr<strong>in</strong>e, and traditions of<br />

with reference to <strong>the</strong> common schools. One of <strong>the</strong>se<br />

journals, published at Chicago, Ill., recently conta<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

<strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g remarks, addressed to Catholic<br />

parents: 'Ra<strong>the</strong>r than serrd your children to <strong>the</strong><br />

state schools, let <strong>the</strong>m go uneducated; better that<br />

<strong>the</strong>y rema<strong>in</strong> unable to read-a thousand times better!<br />

Sooner let <strong>the</strong>m grow up boors, and become hewers<br />

of wood and drawers of water, than be placed <strong>in</strong><br />

those miserable s<strong>in</strong>ks of <strong>in</strong>iquity, <strong>the</strong> free schools.'<br />

Certa<strong>in</strong> priests <strong>in</strong> tMs city recently held language <strong>in</strong><br />

reference to <strong>the</strong> schools, compared with which, what<br />
