220 DANGER IN THE DARK.<br />

Not many days after his return to <strong>the</strong> Queen city,<br />

he was pass<strong>in</strong>g down Third street, and on com<strong>in</strong>g<br />

opposite <strong>the</strong> St. Charles, chanced to cast his eye round<br />

upon that s<strong>in</strong>k of <strong>in</strong>iquity, when a well dressed, good.<br />

look<strong>in</strong>g young man came stagger<strong>in</strong>g out of <strong>the</strong> door,<br />

much <strong>in</strong>toxicated. Forcibly rem<strong>in</strong>ded of what he<br />

himself had been, Alonzo suddenly "paused, and fir<strong>in</strong>g<br />

his eyes upon <strong>the</strong> youthful <strong>in</strong>ebriate, silently contemplated<br />

him. The young man returned his gazeand<br />

after a moment's pause, said:<br />

" Well may you stare at me, Carleton-but for you<br />

I had not been a drunkard I"<br />

This remark struck Alonzo with surprise; for he<br />

remembered not to have seen <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ebriate before.<br />

The young man turned to walk away.<br />

" Stop , " said Alonzo· , "I must know who it is that<br />

lays his s<strong>in</strong> at my door."<br />

"Y CS, yes," stammered <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r, "you have forgotten<br />

<strong>the</strong> boy Allen, who accompanied you <strong>in</strong> your<br />

first spree, and whom you persuaded, aga<strong>in</strong>st his will<br />

and mo<strong>the</strong>r's advice, to take <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>toxicat<strong>in</strong>g cup."<br />

" Alas I Allen, is it you ~ 0, my folly I my wickedness<br />

I my villa<strong>in</strong>yl" exclaimed Alonzo, overwhelmed<br />

with <strong>the</strong> dreadful thought of hav<strong>in</strong>g been <strong>the</strong> ru<strong>in</strong> of<br />

<strong>the</strong> noble youth; for such <strong>in</strong>deed he was. Approach.<br />

<strong>in</strong>g him, Alonzo threw his arms about his neck, and<br />

wept over him.<br />

" 'T is too late, Carleton, to lament my fate now-<br />

I'm lost I-but I forgive you."<br />

"Forgive me not; I don't deserve to be forgiven."
