Those who had <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir possession <strong>the</strong> proscribed<br />

works, chanced to make <strong>the</strong> discovery, that Dup<strong>in</strong> was<br />

act<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> RPY: tak<strong>in</strong>g alarm, <strong>the</strong>y collected all <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>terdicted books toge<strong>the</strong>r, and concealed <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

house of a widow, whom <strong>the</strong>y thought <strong>in</strong> no danger<br />

of be<strong>in</strong>g suspected.<br />

This widow, it may be here observed, was <strong>the</strong> benevolent<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r stratagem, on which he thus soliloquised :<br />

" I 'II go to Bed<strong>in</strong>i, and put him on <strong>the</strong> track; he's<br />

not sharp, but I cau drill him <strong>in</strong>to some shrewdness.<br />

He shall go iu <strong>the</strong> character of a bl<strong>in</strong>d beggar; a pair<br />

of goggles over his eyes will do to <strong>in</strong>dicate his bl<strong>in</strong>dness<br />

- but he mustn't be totally bl<strong>in</strong>d; for <strong>the</strong>n it<br />

would seem too miraculous for him to travel alonelet<br />

him profess to discern objects dimly; <strong>in</strong> that condition<br />

he may with impunity go loung<strong>in</strong>g about from<br />

house to house; and should no one suspicion him, he'll<br />

stand a fair chance to catch some heretic read<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

odious books. That I may not lose <strong>the</strong> honor of it,<br />

nor miss <strong>the</strong> reward which <strong>the</strong> Pope decrees to <strong>in</strong>formants,<br />

it must be understood. between us that he return<br />

immediately to me <strong>in</strong> case he gets a clue to <strong>the</strong><br />

whereabouts of any such books, that I may stand<br />

foremost <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> affair."
