That <strong>the</strong>y might be <strong>the</strong> better qualified to practice<br />

<strong>the</strong> arts of Jesuitism, <strong>the</strong> necessity of acquir<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

knowledge of letters, was urged upon <strong>the</strong>m.. This<br />

seemed an onerous task-especially to Bed<strong>in</strong>t; yet <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> course of a few years, <strong>the</strong>y both succeeded <strong>in</strong> acquir<strong>in</strong>g<br />

education enough to read and write. With<br />

<strong>the</strong>se atta<strong>in</strong>ments, <strong>the</strong>y were satisfied, as respected<br />

literature and science,<br />

The city of Rome, and <strong>in</strong>deed <strong>the</strong> whole country,<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g overrun with <strong>in</strong>dolent, idle and destitute priests.<br />

who received but a scanty support and precarious<br />

liv<strong>in</strong>g, Dup<strong>in</strong> concei~ed <strong>the</strong> idea of render<strong>in</strong>g some<br />

signal service to <strong>the</strong> Pope, <strong>in</strong> order to ga<strong>in</strong> promotion;<br />

for he found that to be a priest, without be<strong>in</strong>g a favorite<br />

of <strong>the</strong> sovereign Pontiff, was no great advantage.<br />

Putt<strong>in</strong>g himself on <strong>the</strong> look-out to perform some<br />

feat <strong>in</strong> Jesuitical artifice, he was not long <strong>in</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

chance to try his hand. A rnmor had somehow got<br />

afloat, that certa<strong>in</strong> of Mart<strong>in</strong> Lu<strong>the</strong>r's books, favorable<br />

to <strong>the</strong> reformation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sixteenth century, were<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g read and circulated among a class of citizens<br />

who had some time been suspected of hold<strong>in</strong>g republican<br />

and Protestant pr<strong>in</strong>ciples. Seiz<strong>in</strong>g eagerly <strong>the</strong><br />

opportunity, Dup<strong>in</strong> set about ferret<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>the</strong> matterand<br />

showed himself exceed<strong>in</strong>gly zealous <strong>in</strong> hunt<strong>in</strong>g<br />

down <strong>the</strong> vile heretics, who should dare possess, and<br />

presume to read books which had been condemned<br />

and <strong>in</strong>terdicted by his hol<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>the</strong> Pope.
