Mary Glidewell, though by nature unserious and<br />

volatile, wept no less freely than <strong>the</strong> rest, but her<br />

solemnity was of short duration; her m<strong>in</strong>d soon reverted<br />

to <strong>the</strong> amus<strong>in</strong>g scene she had so lately witnessed<br />

at <strong>the</strong> convent; and suddenly seized with a fit of<br />

laughter, she broke <strong>in</strong> upon <strong>the</strong> solemnity and stillness<br />

of <strong>the</strong> circle, by giv<strong>in</strong>g vent to her merriment <strong>in</strong><br />

r<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g tones of mirth.<br />

"What now, Mary 1" said Enola, look<strong>in</strong>g up quite<br />

surprised.<br />

"Pardon me;" replied Miss Glidewell, "<strong>in</strong> my<br />

wayward imag<strong>in</strong>ation, I yet see priest Dup<strong>in</strong> splitt<strong>in</strong>g<br />

This allusion brought an <strong>in</strong>voluntary smile to <strong>the</strong><br />

lip of every one present, who had witnessed <strong>the</strong> flight,<br />

and most unseemly plight of <strong>the</strong> terrified priest.<br />

" He will hardly need to do penance very soon, I'm<br />

disposed to conjecture ;" remarked Alonzo.<br />

" 'T is his habit to leave that for o<strong>the</strong>rs to do;" observed<br />

Isadora Norwood.<br />

"If I mistake not," returned Carleton, "he took a<br />

small share of it to-night, after <strong>the</strong> fashion of flagellation;<br />

at anyrate my well platted whip-lash, has considerably<br />

changed its color s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> tune it played to<br />

his forced march. He took an air-l<strong>in</strong>e - but as good<br />

fortune would have it, he didn't outsail me."<br />

" I discovered you followed close <strong>in</strong> his wake."
