moment's reflection, concluded it might be Alonzo,<br />

and that he had not rightly understood <strong>the</strong> signal<br />

agreed upon between Enola and herself. With this<br />

impression, she retraced her steps, and was about to<br />

open <strong>the</strong> door, when she was aga<strong>in</strong> startled by <strong>the</strong><br />

Bound of footsteps beh<strong>in</strong>d her. Look<strong>in</strong>g quickly<br />

round, she perceived <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> darkness a female figure<br />

glid<strong>in</strong>g toward her; reced<strong>in</strong>g suddenly <strong>in</strong>to a comer<br />

near-by, she managed to escape observation. There,<br />

breathless and motionless, Mary awaited <strong>the</strong> result.<br />

The glid<strong>in</strong>g figure moved to <strong>the</strong> door, which directly<br />

opened, and some one entered. The dim star-light<br />

which for an <strong>in</strong>stant relieved <strong>the</strong> darkness of <strong>the</strong> hall,<br />

as <strong>the</strong> door swung open, enabled Miss Glidewell to<br />

discoverthat <strong>the</strong> visitor wore a priestly coat. After<br />

Somewhisper<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> two <strong>in</strong>dividuals entered toge<strong>the</strong>r<br />

<strong>the</strong> room described to Miss Glidewell as <strong>the</strong> sleep<strong>in</strong>g<br />

apartment of <strong>the</strong> Abbess, and whence had issued <strong>the</strong><br />

femalefigure.<br />

"The circumstances look a little suspicious," said<br />

Maryto herself; "but s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> priestly garb precludes<br />

<strong>the</strong> idea of any earthly temptation, it must be all<br />

right. A spiritual affair no doubt."<br />

It was but a few m<strong>in</strong>utes after <strong>the</strong> occurrence just<br />

mentioned, when three light raps upon <strong>the</strong> door signified<br />

to Mary that her friends had arrived. Leav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

her hid<strong>in</strong>g-place, she moved softly to <strong>the</strong> door, and<br />

drew <strong>the</strong> bolt, which <strong>in</strong> spite of her made a slight
