<strong>the</strong>ir friends that <strong>the</strong>y should quit <strong>the</strong> convent for a<br />

wider and happier spt:ere of existence.<br />

In reply, Maria assigned two reasons why <strong>the</strong>y<br />

could not yield to <strong>the</strong> wishes of <strong>the</strong>ir friends <strong>in</strong> that<br />

respect. The first was, <strong>the</strong> sacredness of <strong>the</strong> vows<br />

<strong>the</strong>y had taken; <strong>the</strong> second, -<strong>the</strong> disgrace that would<br />

forever attach to <strong>the</strong>ir characters by so do<strong>in</strong>g, and <strong>the</strong><br />

odium which Catholics would perpetually and everywhere<br />

heap upon <strong>the</strong>ir names.<br />

upon <strong>the</strong>m; <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>fatuated m<strong>in</strong>ds could not be so<br />

easily uncha<strong>in</strong>ed; fixed and <strong>in</strong>delibly stamped upon<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir hearts was <strong>the</strong> belief that a violation of <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

monastic vows would s<strong>in</strong>k <strong>the</strong>ir souls to hopeless,<br />

<strong>in</strong>terview with Enola Glenn - which she thought<br />

could be brought about by Enola putt<strong>in</strong>g on her<br />

apparel, cover<strong>in</strong>g her face with <strong>the</strong> black vail she<br />

had on, and visit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> convent <strong>in</strong> her stead.<br />

To this proposition <strong>the</strong>y readily consented, and<br />

fixed upon an hour <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> afternoon of <strong>the</strong> next day<br />

for <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terview. With this understand<strong>in</strong>g, Miss<br />

Glidewell took leave of <strong>the</strong> nuns. Pass<strong>in</strong>g out, she<br />

said to <strong>the</strong> Abbess: "Expect me to return to-morrow<br />

afternoon." The Abbess bowed, say<strong>in</strong>g, " We shall<br />

be happy to see you."<br />
