How can this be reconciled with <strong>the</strong> idea that <strong>the</strong>re<br />

is a God of <strong>in</strong>f<strong>in</strong>ite power, wisdom, and goodness 1"<br />

" I see no difficulty <strong>in</strong> it."<br />

"Then please remove <strong>the</strong> difficulty out of my way,<br />

for it is as a dark cloud before <strong>the</strong> eye of my m<strong>in</strong>d."<br />

" I know <strong>the</strong>re is seem<strong>in</strong>g discoJ;? <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> universe ;<br />

yet after all, 'tis but' harmony not understood.' Now<br />

consider this: how could man, constituted as he is,<br />

appreciate and enjoy good, without a knowledge of<br />

evil 1 What were harmony, without <strong>the</strong> idea of discord?<br />

Th<strong>in</strong>k of a picture without <strong>the</strong> shad<strong>in</strong>g I nor<br />

could you relish life's sunsh<strong>in</strong>e, without its shadow .<br />

Th<strong>in</strong>k you that tender emotions, k<strong>in</strong>dly feel<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />

and warm affections, could spr<strong>in</strong>g up, and glow <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> heart that never felt sorrow? Aga<strong>in</strong>, what would<br />

health, wealth and prosperity be worth, if we could<br />

formno notion of <strong>the</strong>ir opposites? 'Tis pla<strong>in</strong>, without<br />

contrast, this world would be but dull monotony, and<br />

life a tasteless and <strong>in</strong>sipid th<strong>in</strong>g. And yet aga<strong>in</strong>, were<br />

<strong>the</strong>re no imperfection, noth<strong>in</strong>g defective <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> universe,<br />

<strong>the</strong>re could be no progress. Much of our happ<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

lies <strong>in</strong> progress-<strong>in</strong> advanc<strong>in</strong>g from a less<br />

perfect, to a more perfect state. This law of progress<br />

gives us <strong>the</strong> advantage of cont<strong>in</strong>ual contrastand comparison<br />

- without which, as I have shown, it would<br />

be.impossible to appreciate anyth<strong>in</strong>g. Then it must<br />

appear, that even <strong>the</strong> sorrows and trials that betide<br />

us <strong>in</strong> our journey through life, will ultimately enhance<br />

Ourfelicity. Is <strong>the</strong>re no joy <strong>in</strong> a triumph over difficulties<br />

and dangers? In' overcom<strong>in</strong>g evil with goodl'
