God. Every philosopher knows, that <strong>the</strong> volume of<br />

nature is full of wisdom, and throughout its ample<br />

pages, replete with lessons of profitable <strong>in</strong>struction to<br />

reflect<strong>in</strong>g m<strong>in</strong>ds; yet undoubtedly, as few are charmed<br />

by <strong>the</strong> voice of nature, and attracted by <strong>the</strong> beauties<br />

of creation, as by <strong>the</strong> excellencies of Ohristianity and<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>spired word of God. Many who prof, 8 a<br />

belief <strong>in</strong> div<strong>in</strong>e revelation, enterta<strong>in</strong> xceed<strong>in</strong> ly n r-<br />

row and unworthy views of its heav nly pr<strong>in</strong>ciples,<br />

teach<strong>in</strong>gs and requirements, but <strong>the</strong> same class have<br />

equally narrow, limited and silly notions of <strong>the</strong> mate-<br />

rial Universe. What do <strong>the</strong>y know about <strong>the</strong> extent<br />

of <strong>the</strong> empire of worlds ~ All <strong>the</strong> astronomers that<br />

live, could never conv<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>m, even by <strong>the</strong> clearest<br />

demonstrations, of <strong>the</strong> revolutions, velocity and mag-<br />

nitudes of <strong>the</strong> planets. The Catholic Bishop who<br />

pronounced sentence of death upon Galileo, for teach-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong> earth revolved round <strong>the</strong> sun, evidently<br />

comprehended <strong>the</strong> system of nature as little as he<br />

did that of revelation."<br />
