"Why, he meant me, to be sure; and if I had not<br />

taken flight he would have had me <strong>in</strong> a moment."<br />

for <strong>the</strong> devil always yields to a Bishop."<br />

And off he went <strong>in</strong> breathless haste for <strong>the</strong> Bishop,<br />

whom, when he found, he greatly terrified with <strong>the</strong>,<br />

relation of <strong>the</strong> marvels that had transpired. Collect<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a number of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ferior clergy around him, to<br />

assist <strong>in</strong> vanquish<strong>in</strong>g his" Sooty Majesty," Oonstantius<br />

ventured to make his appearance <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> convent.<br />

With much pomp and solemnitje <strong>the</strong>y celebrated<br />

mass; <strong>the</strong>n form<strong>in</strong>g a procession, as <strong>the</strong>y had done<br />

before, <strong>the</strong> nuns bear<strong>in</strong>g lighted tapers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir hands,<br />

and each priest a crucifix. Bishop Constantius, however,<br />

arme himself more thoroughly than had Fa<strong>the</strong>r<br />

Delaney; <strong>in</strong> his left hand he carried a golden cross
