hands of each, himself tak<strong>in</strong>g a crucifix and hold<strong>in</strong>g it<br />

up before him, bade <strong>the</strong> nuns follow close at his heels.<br />

Thus arrayed, and armed to <strong>the</strong> teeth with spiritual<br />

power, <strong>the</strong>y proceeded to <strong>the</strong> underground apartment<br />

of <strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g; draw<strong>in</strong>g near to <strong>the</strong> fatal cell, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

heard low moan<strong>in</strong>gs, which seemed to come from<br />

with<strong>in</strong>. The priest advanc<strong>in</strong>g to a position with<strong>in</strong> a<br />

" A priest I" responded a hoarse, sepulchral voice;<br />

and earth I" exclaimed <strong>the</strong> terror-stricken fa<strong>the</strong>r-confessor;<br />

and dropp<strong>in</strong>g his crucifix, he wheeled about<br />

and took to his heels with all possible speed, followed<br />

by <strong>the</strong> no less frightened nuns, who scampered like a<br />

flockof wild deer; mak<strong>in</strong>g sure <strong>the</strong> devil was br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g<br />

up <strong>the</strong> rear. When <strong>the</strong>y had reached a place of<br />

safety, <strong>the</strong>y all huddled toge<strong>the</strong>r to talk of <strong>the</strong> won-<br />

drous affair.<br />

"Th<strong>in</strong>k not strange that I fled," said <strong>the</strong> confessor;<br />

"if <strong>the</strong>re had been noth<strong>in</strong>g more than <strong>the</strong> ord<strong>in</strong>ary<br />

spirits of <strong>the</strong> damned, I should easily have banished<br />

<strong>the</strong>m I"<br />

"What was <strong>the</strong>re beside, holy fa<strong>the</strong>r i" <strong>in</strong>quired<br />

one of <strong>the</strong> nuns.
