thrust him forward headlong <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> cell, and before<br />

he had time to recover caught <strong>the</strong> door and brought<br />

it to with a slam, mak<strong>in</strong>g secure both <strong>the</strong> priest and<br />

Abbess; <strong>the</strong>n flee<strong>in</strong>g, she returned to Mr. Glenn's,<br />

and, under <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>fluence of a wild excitement, related<br />

<strong>the</strong> story of her exploit to <strong>the</strong> no little amusement of<br />

<strong>the</strong> family.<br />

As not one of <strong>the</strong> nuns had been apprised of <strong>the</strong><br />

cruel <strong>in</strong>tentions of Dup<strong>in</strong> and <strong>the</strong> Superior, none could<br />

div<strong>in</strong>e whi<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y had gone, what bad become of<br />

<strong>the</strong>m, nor why <strong>the</strong>y were deta<strong>in</strong>ed. Several days<br />

passed by; a great wonderment existed; and a thou-<br />

sand conjectures were made by <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>mates concern<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> mysterious disappearance of Dup<strong>in</strong> and <strong>the</strong> lady<br />

Abbess, but no satisfactory explanation could be given.<br />

Strange noises were heard, dismal shrieks and howl-<br />

<strong>in</strong>gs, it was said, seemed to issue from <strong>the</strong> depths of <strong>the</strong><br />

earth underneath <strong>the</strong> convent. This filled every m<strong>in</strong>d<br />

with alarm and superstitious fears; nor could any be<br />

found bold enough to venture down <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g stair-<br />

way <strong>in</strong> search of <strong>the</strong> cause of <strong>the</strong>se su bterranean voices.<br />

At length one of <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r-confessors, be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formed<br />

of <strong>the</strong> unaccountable absence of Dup<strong>in</strong> and<br />

<strong>the</strong> Superior, and also of <strong>the</strong> hobgobl<strong>in</strong> howl<strong>in</strong>gs that<br />

had been daily and nightly heard about <strong>the</strong> premises,<br />

visited <strong>the</strong> convent, and heard with his own ears <strong>the</strong><br />

mysterious voices. Decid<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong> strange sounds<br />

were <strong>the</strong> wail<strong>in</strong>gs of damned ghosts, he made imme-
