After <strong>the</strong> lapse of several weeks, Isadora returned<br />

to <strong>the</strong> convent with her m<strong>in</strong>d made up to dissemble;<br />

hop<strong>in</strong>g that, by feign<strong>in</strong>g penitence and a spirit of<br />

submission, she might have granted her such priv-<br />

ileges <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> convent, as would afford her <strong>the</strong> chance<br />

of entic<strong>in</strong>g away Anna Maria. She was met at <strong>the</strong><br />

convent gate, by <strong>the</strong> Abbess, whose pardon she hum-<br />

bly~raved; alleg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>sanity as <strong>the</strong> cause of her dis-<br />

obedience, and <strong>the</strong> great crime she had committed <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>jur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> priest; ~he also promised implicit obedi-<br />

ence; if <strong>the</strong>y would but permit her aga<strong>in</strong> to enter <strong>the</strong><br />

cloister.<br />

The Superior <strong>in</strong>formed her that it was necessary<br />

first to ask <strong>the</strong> advice of Mr. Dup<strong>in</strong>; and bade her<br />

go and return on <strong>the</strong> morrow; at which time she<br />

could have an answer.<br />

Dup<strong>in</strong>, be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formed of Isadora's penitence, and<br />

proposition to return to <strong>the</strong> convent , discovered a dia-<br />

bolical pleasure, and rejoiced <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> prospect of be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

afforded an opportunity to be revenged.
