" Yes, I know; and very well know, that most of<br />

you will play any game, to compass political ends and<br />

be promoted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ranks of party."<br />

"Come now, Squire, that's uncharitable."<br />

"To tell <strong>the</strong> truth is uncharitable, I know-and<br />

it is even persecution, to tell <strong>the</strong> downright honest<br />

At this junction, Mr. Lyman Burbanks, an <strong>in</strong>timate<br />

conversation, entered: he was a young man, remarkable<br />

alike for his shrewdness and great good humor;<br />

affect<strong>in</strong>g a seriousness he did not feel, he thus accosted<br />

<strong>the</strong> candidate:<br />
