me long to flyaway from this dismal abode! For,<br />

once was I happy; silver-tongued hope whispered<br />

cheer<strong>in</strong>gly to my glad heart; <strong>the</strong> bright bow of promise<br />

spanned <strong>the</strong> future; loved and caressed by friends,<br />

lightly and gayly I walked <strong>the</strong> primrose-path of pleasure<br />

I But ah! <strong>the</strong> open<strong>in</strong>g flowers I seized even now<br />

have shed <strong>the</strong>ir bloom; <strong>the</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>bow's lovely form has<br />

snddenly vanished. Farewell, sweet dreams of delight!<br />

by penance, self-<strong>in</strong>flicted torture, and devoutly<br />

embrac<strong>in</strong>g poverty and wretchedness, I am to purchase<br />

heaven and escape <strong>the</strong> flames of hell. I must welcome<br />

<strong>the</strong> suffer<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>the</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>s and miseries that save <strong>the</strong><br />

soul, though <strong>the</strong>y destroy <strong>the</strong> body..... "" ""How can<br />

With a tremulous voice, <strong>the</strong> melancholy maid closed<br />

<strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al sentence; <strong>the</strong>n droop<strong>in</strong>g her head, buried<br />

her face <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> white folds of her handkerchief, giv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

vent to <strong>the</strong> heart's deep emotion <strong>in</strong> flow<strong>in</strong>g tears.<br />

An <strong>in</strong>ner door of <strong>the</strong> apartment occupied by <strong>the</strong><br />

solitary recluse now gently opened, and a bloom<strong>in</strong>g<br />

girl of sixteen entered, who also wore <strong>the</strong> habit of a<br />

nun. Cast<strong>in</strong>g a look of m<strong>in</strong>gled surprise and pity<br />

upon <strong>the</strong> weep<strong>in</strong>g damsel, she said:<br />
