papal <strong>in</strong>tolerance, and zealously defended <strong>the</strong> claims,<br />

extravagant pretensions, and arrogance of <strong>the</strong> Hier-<br />

archy; eulogized Romish <strong>in</strong>stitutions; boasted of J es-<br />

uit schools, and lauded <strong>the</strong> clergy as <strong>the</strong> most learned,<br />

wise and holy men upon earth! Dup<strong>in</strong> he held up<br />

as an immaculate sa<strong>in</strong>t and pattern of piety, and de-<br />

nounced as persecutors all who dared to express a dif-<br />

ferent op<strong>in</strong>ion. When accused of double deal<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

or play<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> part of a sycophant, he would th n<br />

very speciously plead liberality, and lay claim to an<br />

em<strong>in</strong>ent degree of Christian charity; sternly deny,<br />

of course, be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> favor of Romanism, or at all<br />

t<strong>in</strong>ctured with <strong>the</strong> doctr<strong>in</strong>es of papists, or <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ci-<br />

ples held by <strong>the</strong> order of Jesuits; but charity, Chris-<br />

tian charity, led him to respect <strong>the</strong> faith of Catholics<br />

as he respected that of Protestants. Marvelously con-<br />

venient is <strong>the</strong> mantle of charity when moral deformity<br />

needs a cover<strong>in</strong>g.; when villa<strong>in</strong>s would shield villa<strong>in</strong>y<br />

<strong>the</strong>y have but to say, charity! charity! and <strong>the</strong> repro-<br />

bate is canonized a sa<strong>in</strong>t!<br />

Peter Twist, be<strong>in</strong>g a candidate for office, one day<br />

<strong>in</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g an electioneer<strong>in</strong>g round, concluded to try<br />

his skill on Squire Delmont, whom he had learned<br />

<strong>in</strong>tended to vote aga<strong>in</strong>st him on account of his pander-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g to popery; so, enter<strong>in</strong>g his office <strong>in</strong> a bland and<br />

familiar manner, he thus addressed <strong>the</strong> magistrate:<br />

" Well, Squire, I 'm snrprised to hear that you've<br />

become a violent religious partisan !"<br />

" Ah, <strong>in</strong>deed! that is news to me also."
