ready to place an ext<strong>in</strong>guisher upon every movement<br />

<strong>in</strong> favor of general education; yet it must not seem<br />

to be OU?' act."<br />

Rev. Lateran, <strong>the</strong>n addressed <strong>the</strong> conclave as follows:<br />

" Brethren - It must be apparent to you all, that<br />

Catholicism,<strong>in</strong> this country, is rang<strong>in</strong>g itself under <strong>the</strong><br />

banner of Jesuitism; and for <strong>the</strong> good reason, that<br />

our order has become <strong>the</strong> right arm, as well as <strong>the</strong><br />

nor are we regarded with <strong>the</strong> same suspicion<br />

<strong>in</strong> this, as <strong>in</strong> many o<strong>the</strong>r countries. Then wby may<br />

not <strong>the</strong> Society of J esns ga<strong>in</strong> a strength and wield an<br />

<strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>in</strong> America, equal, if not surpass<strong>in</strong>g anyth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

it ever atta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> any o<strong>the</strong>r land 1"<br />

Sundry o<strong>the</strong>r speeches were made by men of less<br />

ability, but develop<strong>in</strong>g k<strong>in</strong>dred sentiments, and <strong>the</strong><br />

same anti-republican pr<strong>in</strong>ciples.
