La Solitaire du Figaro 2011
"Let me explain the reasons for which I have chosen to accompany La Solitaire du Figaro as
main partner.
One could set them out in order of importance, but in truth, they all share one same common
value, so let us present them haphazardly, as the 8 minutes that precede the start for the
skippers on the race.
Here at Bompard, we love the sea, even if sometimes it scares us and some of us
take to it as soon as we can to enjoy the pleasure of the open ocean, the pleasure of
the moorings, the pleasure of the night under the stars, of the day, of the calm, of the
agitation and we know that she gets the better of all our clumsiness as sailors, it's
true, we love it.
We love sailors who confront the sea, competing with boats of all sizes, delicate
shells on the great oceans, from 6 to 40 meters, always with the hope to win and also
to appreciate land after days or months of effort and risk.
Here at Bompard, we like to surpass all our targets with small or large means, but
always to surpass ourselves.
Here at Bompard, we are happy with hot or cold weather, not impatient for change,
and that is also what being at sea is about.
Here at Bompard, we like the expertise of detail like that which is required to the
trimming of a sail, or of the precision of a machine for creating a beautiful cashmere
garment.
Here at Bompard, obviously we love luck, but especially we love to optimise on our
difficult crafts, like the sailor who optimises on the good winds, the strong gusts, and
right currents.
So, our company will enjoy this second edition of the offshore racing event after the
experience of the 2010 race that everyone loved so much and followed.
Surely, we will each have a favourite, but I who have chosen to support the Solitaire du
Figaro, I am happy to associate my image to all the participants of this wonderful event."
The course
For 2011 a refreshing edition in the traditional four leg format with a decidedly northern
course between 46 th and 53 rd parallels north.
It is back to basics in the start of this edition of La Solitaire du Figaro as Perros-Guirec and
the Brittany Region will inaugurate the celebrations on Sunday 31 st July. Faithful supporter
of the race, Perros-Guirec harbour holds the record for highest number of participations and
will be welcoming the popular single-handed event for the 16 th time this year. The race last
-Guirec is preparing to put everything in
place to receive the competitors in style.
Caen will be the second French town that will play host port this year. This major town in the
Lower-Normandy region will welcome the La Solitaire du Figaro for the third time. The
harbour and the race village, ideally nestled right in the centre of town, will play host for one
week to the thousands of visitors curious to meet the skippers and enjoy the varied
entertainment offered by the active town council.
Ireland is to be the only non-French stop-over on the new course with Dún Laoghaire as
destination for first time. The magnificent harbour, at only a few minutes from Dublin town
centre, is wholeheartedly preparing to welcome the single-handed sailors at the end of the 3 rd
leg. This is a new stop-over and will not doubt be a new discovery for the skippers, who will
appreciate the charm of a finish in the superb bay of Dublin and the warm welcome at the
National Yacht Club.
The fourth meeting point on the 2011 course will be
in the Vendée. In
2007, the Vendée harbour celebrated the victory of Michel Desjoyeaux, and ever since then
Conseil Generale and town have continually evolved in synch with yachting, continually
welcoming sailors from all over the world, notably the Vendée Globe skippers. The Vendée
population who is fully involved with the Vendée Globe, have prepared a wonderful welcome
for La Solitaire du Figaro this summer. Start town, stop-over or finish town, it will be the 6 th
time that the event stop to Les
Finally, the town of Dieppe will close La Solitaire du Figaro 2011. The expected finish is to
take place in Higher-Normandy region around the 24 th of August. The town and the race first
came together in 2009 on what proved to be a very successful and popular stop over. The
people of Dieppe will welcome the skippers on the final run and shall have a fine celebration
prepared, the climax of which will be the now traditional closing parade on Sunday 28 th of
August.
Perros-Guirec, Caen, Dún Laoghaire, Les Sables-
five towns for a
42 nd edition resolutely marked by novelty and innovation. Between the English Channel, the
Atlantic, the Celtic Sea, and the Irish Sea, La Solitaire du Figaro 2011 promises to be one of
the most important sporting events of the year.
5

Leg 1
PERROS-GUIREC - CAEN
320 MILES
Although 160 nautical miles separate Perros-Guirec from Caen, the course of the first leg will
not follow a direct route, but on the contrary, the course that is planned hugs the southern
British coastline before sailing down into the bay of Seine. A tricky coastal warm-up for the
competitors who leave behind the pink granite coast, close to Caen, before sailing alongside
the Héaux de Bréhat to the plateau of Roches Douvres, an area of strong currents that are
heavy affected by the underwater geography.
After leaving the cardinal buoy Roche-Gautier to port, the fleet is to set off on a first crossing
of the English Channel towards Plymouth Bay, heading to the Eddystone Lighthouse, 90
nautical miles of offshore racing that will require careful sleep management.
The Hand Deeps mark is to mark the beginning of a second inshore section, but this time
along the English coastline. To start with, 25 nautical miles to reach the first obstacle,
Starpoint, followed by an 80 nautical miles stint to reach Fairway, the landing buoy on the
famous Needles channel, Western point of the Isle of Wight where the currents could once
again prove to be the spoil-sports.
To end this leg, the competitors then set off on a south-east run of almost 100 nautical miles
to reach the finish line in Caen harbour, end of this first leg.
The fleet will then enter in parade through the canal to reach the harbour in the centre of the
busy port town of Caen.
6

LEG 2
CAEN DÚN LAOGHAIRE (IRELAND)
470 MILES
Upon covering the first forty-mile run to leave the bay of Seine, the first obstacle the fleet will
encounter is the passage at Barfleur point, always a tricky spot to negotiate due to the strong
currents that can entrap more than one competitor at the beginning of the course.
The course remains an inshore one as the single-handed skippers then sail along the
Cotentin shoreline to the Hague headland, before making way towards the Channel Islands.
They will have to leave the islands of Aurigny, Herm and Guernsey to starboard. In order to
negotiate this tricky passage the skippers need to sail away from the merchant traffic
exclusion zone.
Free of the coastal area obstacles, the competitors then embark on a long crossing of the
English Channel, some 120 nautical miles, from the Hanois Lighthouse to the most Western
p
The last third of the course is an almost full North run covering 190 nautical miles to reach
Dùn Laoghaire harbour, south-east of Dublin.
The route is clear to reach Ireland, yet with many pitfalls when negotiating the passage in the
Saint-Georges Channel, the narrowest point between Wales and Ireland, with steady and
sustained currents.
There will be two possible options: either to sail up along the Welsh coast, drawn by Smalls
Lighthouse, an area well-known for its choppy seas; or to follow the Irish coast and Tuskar
Rock Lighthouse, an option that may not provide much respite for the single-handed
skippers. The sailors will need to negotiate their course carefully along the several large
sandbanks such as Arklow bank, Codling bank, Bray bank and finally Kish bank, before
reaching the pretty Irish harbour of Dùn Laoghaire on the outskirts of Dublin, strongly
protected by long stone walls that make it a veritable stronghold.
7

LEG 3
DÚN LAOGHAIRE LES SABLES- NNE
475 MILES
The third leg is a long run full south of over 300 nautical miles to the Brittany point. Once the
Saint-Georges channel is crossed, between Ireland and Wales, and Wolf Rock lighthouse
has been left to port side, east of the Scilly Isles, a further 90 nautical miles will remain to
reach the coast of Finistère.
The Portsall Grande Basse buoy marks the entrance of a coastal part of the course as the
skippers then need to round the Brittany point leaving Ushant to starboard. Careful and good
tactical choices will be of utmost importance. Some skippers will undoubtedly attempt the
passage by the Fromveur leaving the Molène archipelago and the Isle of Sein to port; others,
depending on the weather windows and the currents, will opt for the Four channel and the
raz de Sein, aware that these passages are marked by strong currents that can really get in
the way of making progress.
The course is then clear to sail to the south of Brittany and reach the Vendée: a further 130
miles of long-distance racing
however as some may decide, in the event of weak winds, to take a more easterly course,
looking for coastal breezes between the isles of Groix, Bell-Île or Yeu. Others shall opt for
following the more direct course, more offshore, to reach the cardinal South mark Le Nouch,
that has become legendary thanks to the Vendée Globe.
8

LEG 4
LES SABLES- DIEPPE
430 MILES
The fourth leg is the race decider. Unlike the first three, this leg is 100% inshore, the Île
-Île to be left to port, with 180 nautical miles to race to the isle of Ushant,
compulsory to be left to port. The passage will be the decisive moment where the different
options can still change the overall results: passage via the Sein undertow or not, passage
via the Fromveur or closer to shore via the Four channel. Though coastal, the course will be
very open and with plenty of twists and turns as the sailors make way.
The second part of the race from the Brittany point to the Cotentin, 130 nautical miles, will
once again require careful navigation and vigilance. The course is free, the only course mark

at the entrance of the Cotentin.
Prior to this, there may be different options like following a course further offshore at the
Channel Islands could be possible. Nevertheless, Guernsey being on the direct course, it is
very likely there will be two groups: those following the northern course North of the island
and those following the southern course, aiming for the little or great Russel, the inner
channels between the islands.
The last part of the course can be complicated by the raz de Blanchard with its strong
undertow and Barfleur. The Cotentin point may prove problematic with fickle winds. The first
skippers to complete this passage will certainly savour their crossing in the bay of Seine - 90
nautical miles to be covered. The very last miles along the coast approaching the cape of
Antifer will be the last obstacle of the race.
In the event of a light wind, the high cliffs could prove to be a barrier for the sailors as they
make their way to the finish.
