TV crews to various locations,
helping to keep film trucks and
equipment secure as news was
reported, and also provided
around-the-clock security at
KDKA’s transmission facility.
At three CONSOL Energy sites
along the river near downtown,
Securitas USA officers patrolled
fuel storage facilities and
controlled access to tugboats
and barges.
“Along with maintaining a safe
environment for the world leaders,
a key focus of the entire security
effort was on safeguarding the
city’s infrastructure,” explains
John Dixon, Securitas USA area
vice president. “That included
communications and utilities
services, as well as protecting
public and private property.”
During Summit week, Securitas
USA also provided temporary
service at the main United Parcel
Service facility, at Citizens Bank
locations, and at several hotels
and retail stores. Seven experienced
officers from the Securitas
USA branches in Erie and
Altoona, PA spent part of the
week in Pittsburgh to fulfill additional
requests for temporary
service. The Pittsburgh branch
remained open around-theclock,
with either Glaze or
Branch Manager Jeffrey Werner
available to immediately
respond to security issues at
any location.
an acknowledged
success
From a security standpoint, the
G-20 Summit in Pittsburgh was
considered a major success.
Police estimated that about
4,500 people participated in
protests throughout the city,
but most demonstrations were
relatively small and wellcontrolled
by police. A total
of 190 arrests were made and
area businesses incurred
approximately $50,000 of
damage, but no Securitas USA
clients were affected.
Among the many commendations
received by the Securitas
USA branch was a letter from
Paul Wolak, security director
at Station Square, another Forest
City Enterprises property. Station
Square is a popular entertainment
district located across the
river from downtown and the
site of a Sheraton hotel where
four heads of state stayed during
the Summit. Wolak wrote:
The management staff of
Station Square and the
Sheraton hotel would like to
commend the actions of the
regular security officers and
the extra officers that worked
the week of the G-20. The
officers worked long hours
and performed their duties
in a professional manner.
We believe that Station
Square did not have a major
incident because of the
security staffing and posting
of the officers.
“Credit goes to our entire team —
those at the branch and our
officers who worked tirelessly to
protect people and property at
every client location,” adds Glaze.
“I’m also very pleased that, based
on our on-going temporary work
and the needs of new clients, we
were able to retain all of the new
officers who joined the team in
the weeks prior to the Summit.
I’m proud of all of them.” ¡
