100 contractors and as many as 300 guests who
arrive at the main gate each day. Securitas USA
officers also perform many law enforcement duties
as they patrol the 90 miles of private roads within
the community.
“Our officers serving private communities in this
area have the same arrest authority as police do,”
explains Scott Tubbs, Securitas USA branch
manager. “Select officers receive South Carolina
Law Enforcement Division training and are
Red Cross certified in CPR and AED.”
Securitas USA officers at Sun City patrol roads,
write in-house traffic citations, and serve as first
responders in the event of emergencies. In the
case of serious traffic accidents, injuries, or medical
conditions, the South Carolina Highway Patrol,
Beaufort County Sheriffs’ Department and/or EMTs
are summoned, as appropriate. But most incidents
are handled by Securitas USA’s experienced officers.
Securitas USA’s site manager at Sun City, for
example, is Bert Defazio, retired from the New York
Sheriff’s Department, and Assistant Site Manager
Kevin Kamarada, a retired Ohio state trooper. Other
Securitas USA officers at Sun City include Tim
Hunt, retired from the NYPD, Bob Lhotan, a retired
New York police officer, and Mike Bieda, retired
from the Maryland State Police. Patrol Officer
Robert Crewdson retired after 30 years’ service as
an FBI agent.
“It’s an excellent security team that appropriately
and tactfully handles all types of issues,” says
