CONTENTS.--C. This book records only sayings of<br />

the disciples, chiefly those of Tzfi Hsia and next those of<br />

Tzfi Kung, For in the School of Confucius, after Yen<br />

Tzfi no one equalled Tzfi Kung in acumen, and after<br />

Ts_ng Tzfi none equalled Tzfi Hsia in sincerity.<br />

To offer one's life. L. The scholar trabwd for l_ublic<br />

duty, seeing threatening danger, is prepared to sacrifice<br />

his life. When etc. gain etc. he thinks of righteousness.<br />

In sacrifice his thoughts me reverential. In mourning his<br />

thoughts are about the grief, w]dch/w s,_ould fled. Such<br />

a man commands our approbation indeed. Z. sapientiae<br />

alumnus viso periculo exponens vitam, etc. in funere ati<br />

tendens maerori, is satis jam. K. A gentleman in presence<br />

of danger should be ready to give up his life etc. mourning<br />

should show heartfelt grief: the above is about the sum ofthe<br />
