known as the Lun Yii Ch&ag I _, _ _ _..But very<br />

soon afterwards the prince of Chinese commentators arose<br />

in the person of Chu Hsi :_ ,_,., whose voluminous<br />

writings and commentaries, composed during the twelfth<br />

century, are the crown of China's scholarship. His interpretation<br />

of the Analects, despite the many attacks that<br />

have since been made thereon, has been accepted as<br />

orthodoxy from his day to our own. His three works on<br />

the Analects are the Lun Yu Chi I, _ _ _ _, the<br />

Lun Yfi Chi Chu, _ _ _ _, and theLunYfiHuo<br />

W_n _ --_<br />

As an instance, however, of the zeal with which the<br />

various interpretations of Chutz_t have been debated the<br />

following amusing incident is recorded. Li Cho Wu ._.<br />

d4__-_ an erratic scholar of the sixteenth century, who<br />

afterwards turned Buddhist, is said to have been so annoyed<br />

with Chu-tzfi's views, that he had a wooden image made<br />

of the great commentator, with hand outstretched palm<br />

upwards. This he placed in his study and many times a<br />

day did he relieve his ire, when angered by Chu's interpretations,<br />

by beating with a ruler the hand of the unconscious<br />

image, demanding how he, Chu, had dared to<br />

put such mistaken ideas before the world l<br />

The third school of interpreters belongs to the present<br />

dynasty, and reached its climax in the works of Mao Ch'i<br />

Ling _c_ _ _ whose nomme de plume was Hsi Ho<br />
