was a man of Lu, who had studied official monrning under
Confucius, to whom at this time he must have given some
offence. Cf _ -_i_XVIII. II. i. 22. Confucius took this
mode of bringing it home. Possibly it was a lesson in
manners to Ju Pei--a lesson which has not been without
formative influence on Chinese character.
CHAPTER XXI.--THE BURDEN OF THREE
YEARS' MOURNING.--I. Or, asked about the three
years' mourning, saying, A year is already a long time.
The three years of mourning at that time, as now, meant
mourning in three years, that is 25 or 27 months. Befme
the Chou dynasty it meant three full years. This mourn-
ing necessitated the laying aside of all duties, the wearing
of sackcloth (or mean clothes), the eating of poor food,
much weeping and wailing, and, when sh ingently carried
out, the presence of the nqourner in a hut _, [_ by the
grave for three years. See _. _ XXXI. When Con-
fucius died Tzfi Kung remained by his grave for three
years. Tsai Wo the sceptical VI. 24, the lazy V. 9, the
eloquent XI. 2, very sensibly thought one year of such a
useless burden suffÉcient, and advances two arguments one
