IV._Works on the AnalecLs.<br />

There have been three great schools of commentators<br />

on lbe Classics. The first was that of the ttan _ dynasty,<br />

the second that of the Sung 51_ and the third that of the<br />

present Ch'ing f_ dynasty. The earliest commentator of<br />

all was K'ung An Kuo ;tL _ [_l_ B. C. I4o-I5O, the<br />

head of the Confucian family when certain of the Classics<br />

were recovered from the wall of the K'ung house.<br />

Though his work on the Analects was lost, traces of it are<br />

found in the works of the commentators who followed<br />

him. The more noted of An Kuo's successors was _Pao<br />

Hsien. {g /_ A. D. 2 5, Ma Yung _ _]_, A. D. 13o,<br />

and his contempo,'ary Chang Hsfian _1_ ._ (_ _ _),<br />

But the principal work of this, the Han dynasty, in tile<br />

time of the " Three Kingdoms," was that of the five<br />

scholars and ministers of the Kingdom of Wei _)l_, the<br />

chief of whom was Ho Yen fffJ _:, by whose name the<br />

publication is generaIly known. This work, the Lun Yfi<br />

Chi Chieh, _t _ _ )_ embodied the labours of alt<br />

predecessors, and is in existence and regular use to the<br />

present day. This then is the highly valuable bequest<br />

made by the Han school to posterity.<br />

In the dynasties that followed other commentators arose,<br />

the result of whose efforts was embodied in the works of<br />

Ituang K'an _ _1_, published in the sixth century, under<br />

the title of Lun Y_'lSu _ _ _j_, All preceding works<br />

however were overshadowed by the scholarship of the
