the Chi clan, who had usurped the ducal authority. This<br />

opens with Yang Huo, the Chi Comptroller, a Minister's<br />

minister, see XVI, 2, 3 who had usurped his chief's power<br />

with all which that included.<br />

and sought to make himself sole administrator of Lu,<br />

Confucius would not go, so Yang Huo sent him a present,<br />

When a minister sent a present to a man of position, if the<br />

latter were not home to receive it, it was his duty to go and<br />

return thanks in person ;_hence Yang Huo sent the present<br />

when Confucius was out, who also timed his visit to<br />
