Lesser Learning, being works on the form of the characters,
45 collections, fiom II different individuals. The
Works of Mencius were included in the second division,
among the writings of what were deemed orthodox
scholars, of which there were 836 collections, from 53

Considering that through his disciple Ts_ng Tz_ and
his grandson Tz_ Ss_t we have almost direct connection
between Confucius and Mencius, we are brought to within
about half a century of the destruction of the books, and
seeing their recovery _as set about without delay, and that
the Hart dynasty placed such value on them as is made
evident by this important catalogue, there seems little
doubt that the remains we possess to-day are reasonably
authentic and reliable.
As to the Analects in particular, when the Hart dynasty
first began to recover the ancient books, two copies of the
Analects competed for acceptance, one flora Lu _, the
native State of Confucius, and another from the neighbour-
ing State of Ch'i _, The Lu copy contained twenty
books, while that of Ch'i contained twenty" two, and had
moreover, as noted in Chu's Introduction, more chapters
and phrases than its rival.
A third copy, however, was discovered about the year
i 5o. B. C. which is known as the ancient copy _ _t_-,
and which confirmed the Lu text already recovered.
