book contains a number of epigrams on government and
the duties of rulers. The four words uttered in reply to
Tz_ Lu might almost serve as its text :_d _ _ _,
CHAPTER I.--THE LEADER SHOULD LEAD.--
x. _ _-, _ _o The difficulty- is with the ;_o If
int-_rpreted by "the people," as is usual, it would read,
Go before them, set them to work. With this idea K'ung
An Kuo interpreted by " Set them the example and then
you can set them to work." Legge suggests taking :;_
in a neuter sense. The accepted view is as in the translation.
C. The philosopher _ says: )L ]_a ,_ '_ 1_
,__,., Ill] _ _ :_ _,_, Wherever the people should go,
let the ruler in person go first and the people without
orders will follow ; whatever the people should do let the
ruler in person do diligently, and they will do works however
arduous, without complaint. L. Go before the
people wit/t yonr example, and be laborious in their affairs.
