treated exactly as he did his other disciples, XVI. 13. If<br />

also it be really true that he divorced his wife, of which<br />

there is lack of satisfactory evidence, it is.here that it<br />

should be placed. In face of the manner in which Li, her<br />

son, bewailed her death, such a divorce seems incredible.<br />

In B. C. 5oi, being the ninth year of Duke Ting, and<br />

the 5Ist of the Sage's own life, after he had refused to<br />

follow the fortunes of Xung shan Fu-jao, the Duke also<br />

having expelled Yang Huo, and obtained control of his<br />

State, Confucius once more accepted office, being appoint-<br />

ed governor of Chung tu r0 _, In a year he had<br />

produced a transformation which in the pages of the<br />

approaches the marvellous. His regulations assigned<br />

" different food for the old and young, and different<br />

burdens to the strong and the weak. Males and females<br />

kept apart from each other in the streets. A thing dropt<br />

on the road was not picked up" etc., etc. The Duke,<br />

struck with such reformation, asked if his method could<br />

be applied to the whole State, and was answered that<br />

it could be applied to the whole Empire. Thereupon<br />

Confucius was promoted to the Office of Wolks, in<br />

which he distinguished himself by his survey of the<br />

State and his advancement of agriculture. His next<br />

office was that of Chief Justice, whereupon all crime<br />

ceased to exist.<br />

During his tenure of this high office, the head of the<br />

Chi clan having carried his enmity against the late Duke<br />

Chao to the Duke's grave by burying him apart fl'om his<br />
