of the book chiefly relates to Confucius himself; the latter,<br />

consists of various sayings, mostly urging to diligence.<br />

CHAPTER I.--GAIN, FATE, PERFECTION.--<br />

Calculating whether it will pay is derogatory to rectitude ;<br />

the laws underlying the divine ordinances are abstruse;<br />

and the principles and practice of noble virtue cover a<br />

great area. L. The subjects of which the Master seldom<br />

spoke were,--profitableness, and also the appointments of<br />

I-l"eaven, and perfect virtue. Z. de lucro, atque Providentia,<br />

atque perfectiqnis natura. K ....... his conversation<br />

seldom spoke of interests, or religion or of morality.<br />

Couv ....... du gain, de la providence celeste, de la vertu<br />

parfaite.<br />
