TITLE--The book opens with T'ai Po and ends with<br />

Yao, Shun, Yfi, W6n and Wu, with miscellaneous sayings<br />

by Confucius and Ts_ng Tzfi in the middle.<br />

CHAPTER I.--NOBILITY INDEPENDENT OF<br />

APPLAUSE.--T'ai Po renounced the possibility of be-<br />

coming Emperor because his views on loyalty to the Shang<br />

emperors differed from his father's, and the pith of the<br />

Sage's praise is that T'ai Po preferred to give no reason for<br />

withdrawing, thereby losing popular approval, rather than<br />

be disloyal to his father's aims, however much he disapproved<br />
