The Analects of Confucius.
VOLUME [.
BOOK i.
CONCERNING FUNDAMENAL PRINCIPLES.
TITLE OF THE WORK. _ Lun is from _-_ words
and _ (/Lk__r collect, and [[_ archives. Wins.) arrange,
collect, i.e. discourses, discussions. _ Y_ is from
words and I, i.e. to tell, infornl. The g_[ :_ _ _'
(Intro. p. 76) says: _ _: _J_ _ _ _ _: _, Lun
is to deliberate upon and discuss. Y/2 is to narrate by
way of reply. It goes on to say : This Book records the
dialogues (_B r_] _ ;_ _-_ _) which took place between
Conf. and his disciples concerning Education (_)
and Government (_'_n). "The Dialogues of Confucius "
suggests itself as a more suitable title than Analects, but
through Dr. Legge's influence the latter term has become
technical, and is therefore adopted as the title of the present
version. The whole work is usually divided into two
parts, the i t[_ and the "lv _ Part I consisting of
Chapters I-X, and Part II of Chapters XI-XX.
TITLE OF BOOK I. The two opening characters,
(_- El excepted,) give the title to each Book, a custom,
as Dr. Imgge points out, similar to that of the Jews, who
mane many books of the Bible from the first word in them.
