diminutiye term -_ should have become one<br />

of the greatest in the language, just as Son of Man and<br />

Son of God have become the noblest titles of Our Lord.<br />

Possibly -_ is an abbreviation of 5_ "-_', It is used<br />

alone in the Classics principally in the three following<br />

senses, I. THE Master, Confucius, a term of the highest<br />

esteem and warmest regard ; in this sense it may be used<br />

preceding a name, e.g. in the Intto. to the Great Learning<br />

:1_ _ z_jz "My Master Ch'_ng-tzfi." 2. As a term of<br />

respect in the sense of Sir, gentlemen; or of kindly<br />
