Greetings SISS Parents, Students, and Staff!
Ah, summer is here! We all made it through another
school year, now hopefully wiser and ready to face the
next challenge coming our way. World Cup Fever has
taken over the country and we await anxiously the next
match Germany plays this coming week, hopefully on the
road to the championship. Wherever your holidays take
you, a "staycation" or somewhere far far away, spend
some quality time with your family & friends and really
re‐charge your batteries.
I hope that we will be able to continue this newsletter in
the next school year, but it will only survive with your
help. This means I need content from you or your
children for the various sections within (photos of events,
news stories of school events or interesting tidbits about
things going on in the area, shout outs, editorials, book
reviews, cool web sites, original art work or poetry, and
of course any classifieds or ads). Please make a note on
your calendar that the next deadline for submissions is
AUGUST 31 ‐ send me something at
sissparentnews@googlemail.com. This type of endeavor
is only valuable and worth reading if supported by the
community that it serves. I look forward to hearing from
you!
Great news! You can find this newsletter and all
October 1122 Autumn Break

Dear Families of SISS,
SISS Parent News
Another year gone! As we wrapup School Year 20092010 and prepare for a glorious
summer break, I would like to make a few announcements and requests.
First, thanks as always to the SISS Activities Committee for their efforts in raising “petty
cash” funds for our school. This year’s activities garnered over €4000 which have been used
to purchase various teaching aides and equipment across primary and secondary schools (list
available upon request!). Well done all!
However, you can only milk the same cow so many times…
We are ever in need of volunteers to man events; as well as organized, dedicated individuals
willing to take over the planning and organization of a single event during the year. On
Thursday, August 12 (6:30pm, DaMarios Restaurant, Seeheim) there will be an open meeting
of the SISS Activities Committee. I hope we will see some new faces at this meeting!
Second, thanks to the class teachers who have supported the fund raising activities this year;
particularly Mrs. Hocken, Mr. Meyer, Frau Wetterich and Mr. Toogood (Sr.)!
Finally, please take some time over the summer break to help get your child’s class in order
for the coming year. Parent Reps will be organizing cleanup and painting details (as
necessary) with the class teachers. Let’s start SY20102011 fresh!
It has been an honor serving as Chair of the Parent Representatives these two years and I hope
I have done right by all. I can say I have truly tried. I hope every parent who has the time
and inclination will consider running for Parent Rep. It is not an easy job, but it is a most
rewarding one.
Kind regards,
A few days before the start of the summer break SBS said goodbye to 213 young people who
completed their Haupt or Realschulabschluss or their Abitur. We congratulate all of them and
wish them all the best for their futures!
The head SBS parents' rep, Ellena de la Mar, turned over the newly designed outside area in
front of the snack attack to the students.
648 SBS pupils participated in this year's Kangaroo Competition. This orginated in Australia
and is a Maths competition to encourage students' interest in Maths. The idea is to make Maths
fun! 56 SISS Y5/Y6 students took part. Top three were: Katharina Jans, yr 5, 3rd place; Harry
Walker, yr 5, 3rd place; Victoria Hein, yr 6,long kangaroo jump.
HansJoachim Feller will continue to document the construction progress of the new SISS
buliding which has just been awarded the German Sustainable Building Council's precertification
in silver.
Within the framework of the Europe projects, helmut Buchholz for the 6th time is organising an
ecumenical field excursion to Geneva for students of the upper seondary schools.
The annual SBS school festival will be held on 10 Septmber in the new school year. The group
responsible for the preparations, being led by deputy school director Marlis Goeble
Herrenbrueck, is grateful for all ideas and especially for some helping hands. The evening prior
to the fest, SBS wants to offer it thanks to the many helpers and supports. Their work has made
the new high quality technical equipment in the AULA possible.
The Europaeische Akademie is offering a summer school from 31 July to 6 August. HLZ is
supporting this plan; for the first 10 student applications from Hessen , HLZ will pay the 70
Euro fee.
Buses/Trams: On the 25th and 26th August beginning in the 2nd lesson, reps from the
Jugendverkehrsschule Pfungstadt along with Ms Orth of DADINA will enter the classrooms in
order to provide information about the project, "Bus und Bahnbegleiter" a program where
fellow students are trained in assisting young riders.
The staff and administration wish you a nice and relaxing summer!
2010 2nd Annual SISS Charity Walkathon
During the wrapup assembly for this year’s walkathon, held on 30
June, there were plenty of “oohs” and “aahs“ along with a few “wows“
heard in the SISS Hall. That’s because the children did an amazing job
in helping to raise money for the Christoffel Blindenmission (CBM).
And when Mr. Bruch, a representative of the CBM, offered his heartfelt
thanks to the children for raising over 6,000 euro, they couldn’t contain
their excitement. (The actual figure will be over 6,500 euro!!) Mr. Bruch
also explained to the children where the money will be used (for an eye
clinic project in Kitwe, Zambia) and how it will help the people of that
region to gain access to medical care that will restore sight to over 200
people. (continued...)
sissparentnews@googlemail.com July 2010

(walkathon, continued)
SISS Parent News
The walkathon, which was held on 30 May, gave 85 SISS and preschool children,
along with their siblings and parents, the chance to show both their fitness and their
goodwill. Though the weather did not always cooperate and the rains came, the spirit
of the runners was not dampened. A total of 1280 laps were tallied that day – that is
an outstanding 512 km. There were, of course, some other dazzling results that day.
For the second year in a row, Laurent Brune (Y4 CC) ran the most laps – 36 in all –
which also makes him the top runner in Y4. In Y1/2 it was Felix Schimmel (HH) who
outran the rest, with a total of 31 laps. Hannah MaierPeveling (DD) took the top spot
in Y3 with her 30 laps. In Y5, three children, Viola Brune, Edmond Clemens (both
5LS) and Mark Bennett (5MG), completed 34 laps. Both Viola Graef and Anthony
Morgan (both 6AW) ran 17 laps to top the list among the Y6 students.
In order to encourage classes to work as a team, a 50 euro prize was given to the class
that raised the most money. In the Y1 – Y3 group, the winning class was the Dazzling
Dinos, whose tremendous class total of 1,248.50 euro also represents the most money
raised by any class in the school. In the Y4 – Y6 group, it was the Elegant Eagles with
a total of 1,051 euro who were awarded the prize. And though no prize was given in
this category this year, the Happy Hedgehogs deserve a special mention, too. Their
class had a total of 15 participants (students and their siblings/parents) who
walked/ran to raise money for the CBM. Though they fell just a bit short in the
money raised category, their class spirit makes them all winners.
The SISS Walkathon Committee, which consists of 5 parents (Kristina Lelek
chairperson, Brittaney Meyer, Georgina Schäfer, Lora Stephan and Carolyn Wachter),
is enormously proud of all the children who participated and enjoyed a fun day at
the ChristianStock stadium. The results exceeded the committee’s expectations and
made all the hard work worthwhile. Thanks to all the parents, teachers and, most
importantly, children who made this event such an superb success!
This section is reserved for anyone or anything you would like to acknowledge...who are you proud of?
On a slightly lighter note, I would like to thank all those who ordered the new SISS tshirts. The project brought in approximately 200 Euro for
the school fund. I was pleased with the quality, and the feedback received centered around the perhaps "boring" nature of the simple
logo...others said that we should have stuck to one or two colors, etc. Next year, these comments can be taken in account by whomever
chooses to run the project. (L. Giordimaina)
"In Theaters Now" by, Gianluca Giordimaina, aka "The Movie Man"
Toy Story 3: Well folks, it's finally here! The third installment in the Toy Story has come. The
story centers around Andy going off to college and needing to clean out his room before
leaving. Woody and co. are donated to a daycare. At first all the toys seem nice and the
atmosphere is friendly, but soon they discover dark secrets about the daycare toys' leader
(bear) and his group of toys. This is family fun and packs big laughs too. I strongly
recommend it, especially to fans of the original Toy Story movies. I dare say that the rating
of "G" (6) is a little low may frighten very young children.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: This movie is based on the well known book series by Jeff Kinney. As
in the books, the story centers around Greg Heffley and his friend Rowley going to Middle
School. Though Middle School has packed many surprises for them, from getting chased by
teenagers to sleeping in a bathtub, all the way to terrorizing kindergartners. This is a great
family movie that is a lot of fun to watch. I must say, having read it, that the book was
better...but still worth watching!
Hi,
I am teacher from the US who will join the SISS International School in August and am
looking for a small apartment (can be attached to the house like an attic apartment
on a separate wing or floor of the house) for rent. My maximum budget is 450EUR
inclusive of utilities. As far as Internet is concerned, I have that base covered. As
I am without a car this year, I hope that your home or rental is well connected to
the school by public transportation. Ideally, it would not be too far from shops and
cafes/restaurants. It does not need to be in Seeheim but rather just in the south
Darmstadt area. I would be ever so appreciative if you would contact me at:
