11 0 GENERAL STUDIES FOR ND HND PROGRAMMES<br />

11 1 General studies courses are Included In <strong>the</strong> curriculum <strong>of</strong> tertiary Institutions so that students may<br />

improve <strong>the</strong>ir communication skills oral and written arid <strong>the</strong>ir understanding <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>mselves and <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

environment where <strong>the</strong>y will live work and make useflll contributions as worthy citizen <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country<br />

and <strong>the</strong> world at large General studies courses will also in<strong>for</strong>m <strong>the</strong> student on how to relate his skills<br />

to <strong>the</strong> society and <strong>the</strong> economy<br />

112 The general studies courses account <strong>for</strong> 10 15 <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> contact hours allocated to <strong>the</strong> programme<br />

distributed by courses in <strong>the</strong> art and humanities social and behavloural sciences ma<strong>the</strong>matics and<br />

basic sciences and physical and health education<br />

All students enrolled In <strong>the</strong> ND and HND programmes Irrespective <strong>of</strong> discipline are expected<br />

to take<br />

all <strong>the</strong> modules In use <strong>of</strong> English Communication in Enpllsh Physical and Health Education Contem<br />

porary Social Problems andOutline History <strong>of</strong> Nigeria citizenship O<strong>the</strong>r courses aretaken as elective<br />

courses depending on <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional programme aM <strong>the</strong> resources available to <strong>the</strong> institution to<br />

mount <strong>the</strong>m<br />

11 3 The Board will require evidence that <strong>the</strong> general studies course exist in <strong>the</strong> institution and that<br />

a <strong>the</strong> compulsory and o<strong>the</strong>r mandatory courses are <strong>of</strong>fered and passed by any student that may<br />

qualify <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> award <strong>of</strong> ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> ND or HND as appropriate<br />

b <strong>the</strong>reare available In required numberqualified teachingstaff<strong>for</strong> each course An average teaching<br />

load <strong>of</strong> between 15 18 hours weekly and astaff student ratio SSR <strong>of</strong> about 1 20 so as to allow<br />

<strong>the</strong> staff adequate time to grade students work<br />

c appropriate books journals and non book items related to <strong>the</strong> general studies courses are<br />

available in <strong>the</strong> library in addnion to <strong>the</strong> text books recommended <strong>for</strong> each course<br />

d The mode <strong>of</strong> teaching Include lectures student participation in practical assignments Jnvolvlng<br />

written work and projects<br />

e students oral and written communication and <strong>the</strong>ir knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>environment and world affairs<br />

are good<br />

12 0 PROCESS OF RE ACCREDITING A DIPLOMA PROGRAMMME<br />

12 1<br />

The process <strong>of</strong> re accrediting a programme Is as follows<br />

a The Institution shall complete 5 No <strong>for</strong>m <strong>NBTE</strong> PRO RA1 and return to <strong>the</strong> Executive Secretary<br />

<strong>Programmes</strong> Department <strong>NBTE</strong> PMB 2239 Kaduna at least one month to <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> visit<br />

b On receipt <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> completed <strong>for</strong>ms <strong>the</strong> Board shall compose a team and fix a date to visit <strong>the</strong><br />

programme<br />

o The visit which Is estimated to last <strong>for</strong> working days Is <strong>the</strong>n made and a comprehensive report<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> visit Is submitted to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Re</strong>ctor after an exn interview<br />

d The <strong>Re</strong>ctor shall make available to <strong>the</strong> Board his comments on <strong>the</strong> team s original report based<br />

on statements <strong>of</strong> fact<br />

e The report is <strong>the</strong>n presented to <strong>the</strong> Board todecide on whe<strong>the</strong>rto accredit <strong>the</strong> programme or deny<br />

it accreditation<br />
