11 0 GENERAL STUDIES FOR ND HND PROGRAMMES 11 1 General studies courses are Included In the curriculum of tertiary Institutions so that students may improve their communication skills oral and written arid their understanding of themselves and their environment where they will live work and make useflll contributions as worthy citizen of the country and the world at large General studies courses will also inform the student on how to relate his skills to the society and the economy 112 The general studies courses account for 10 15 ofthe contact hours allocated to the programme distributed by courses in the art and humanities social and behavloural sciences mathematics and basic sciences and physical and health education All students enrolled In the ND and HND programmes Irrespective of discipline are expected to take all the modules In use of English Communication in Enpllsh Physical and Health Education Contem porary Social Problems andOutline History of Nigeria citizenship Other courses aretaken as elective courses depending on the professional programme aM the resources available to the institution to mount them 11 3 The Board will require evidence that the general studies course exist in the institution and that a the compulsory and other mandatory courses are offered and passed by any student that may qualify for the award of either the ND or HND as appropriate b thereare available In required numberqualified teachingstafffor each course An average teaching load of between 15 18 hours weekly and astaff student ratio SSR of about 1 20 so as to allow the staff adequate time to grade students work c appropriate books journals and non book items related to the general studies courses are available in the library in addnion to the text books recommended for each course d The mode of teaching Include lectures student participation in practical assignments Jnvolvlng written work and projects e students oral and written communication and their knowledge of theenvironment and world affairs are good 12 0 PROCESS OF RE ACCREDITING A DIPLOMA PROGRAMMME 12 1 The process of re accrediting a programme Is as follows a The Institution shall complete 5 No form NBTE PRO RA1 and return to the Executive Secretary Programmes Department NBTE PMB 2239 Kaduna at least one month to the date of the visit b On receipt of the completed forms the Board shall compose a team and fix a date to visit the programme o The visit which Is estimated to last for working days Is then made and a comprehensive report of the visit Is submitted to the Rector after an exn interview d The Rector shall make available to the Board his comments on the team s original report based on statements of fact e The report is then presented to the Board todecide on whetherto accredit the programme or deny it accreditation 7 3lj l j I
13 0 COMPOSITION OF THE ADHOC RE ACCREDITATlON TEAM 13 1 The composition of the team shall include representatives of a For Each Professional Programme Olfered at ND HND I The Academic Community Polytechnics and or other tertiary institutions 2 No ii Industry National Employers Association 1 No iil Registration Council Professional Association if any 1 No iv NBTE staff as co ordinator The number may be reduced by one if programme is offered only at ND level and increased on pro rata basis if department offered more than two options of the programme at HND level b For General Studies for All Programmes i The Academic Community Polytechnics or other tertiary institutions 2 No ii NBTE staff as Co ordinator 13 2 The appointment of team members is the prerogative of the National Board for Technical Education The Board may however consider making a change to the membership of an accreditation team if the institution has good reasons for objecting to any member of the team In all the final decision on the membership of the team is that of the Board Purposes of the Adhoc Re Accredltation Visit 13 3 The on site adhoc accreditation visit is undertaken for three reasons a To verifyonthe spot some vital information thatare not adequately described on thequestionnaire for example the intellectual atmosphere the morale of staff and students the character and standard of work performed and in sighting various items of teaching facilities and how they are being used to educate the student b To help the staff and head of department offering the programme to assess its weak and strong points c To examine in further detail the materials compiled by the department reiating to the overall management ofthe department For example teaching facilities teaching staff admission require ment quality of each course offered etc 14 0 ACTIVITIES OF TEAM MEMBERS DURING THE ACCREDITATION VISIT The Chairman Team Leader 14 1 Among others the Chairman Team Leader shall a Draw up a programme of activities to accomplish in the least possible time the objectives of the team s visit to the institution to wit to determine if the programme offered by the institution has in all respect met the accreditation standards laid down by the Board and if the programme can therefore be re accredited The proposed agenda should bediscussed and agreed to by all team members at the beginning of the visit b Allocate specific responsibilities to team members functioning singly and in groups in performing various activities of the team c Give guidance on the presentation of individual or group report on their areas of responsibilities for the final report and final recommendations of the team 8
