FOREWORD Followingfrom the provision of the Education National Minimum Standard andEstablishment ofInstitutions Decree 16ofAugust 1985 it is the policy ofthe Board that all programl1 les leading to national awards such as the National Diploma ND and Higher National Diploma HND shall be re accredited every five years This is to ensure that high academic standards are maintainedin our technical education institutions This re accreditation exercise is intended to ensure that all programmes granted accreditation havethe minimum teaching resources available to them which are being maintained and teaching and learning are takingplace Allbeing well it is hopedthat a culture must have been established in the department that ensures atall times that the l1 linimum nationalstandard of education was being maintained and improved upon This publication highlights the re accreditation process It also includes the criteria for re accrediting a programme the composition of the adhoc programme accreditation team the roles of the NBTE the institution and team members before during and after the adhoc accreditation visit It is hoped that the content will provide adequate information andguidance to affected institutions team members and the general public JJr A m Executive Secretary 14th January 1993 Ya6ani if on the issue
1 0 INTRODUCTION GUIDELINES FOR THE RE ACCREDltATION OF DIPLOMA PROGRAMMES OFFERED BY POLYTECHNICS CdLLEGES OF AGRICULTURE AND SIMILAR TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN NIGERIA 1 1 Re Accreditation What it is The re accreditation of a programmeby the National Board fotTechnical Education NBTE means the confirmation of the recognition granted by the Board that after a period of time say five to ten years the standard and quality of education and training in the programme as determined during the initial and subsequent accreditation visits were still being maintained or have been improved upon 1 2 Objectives Of Re Accreditation The objectives of re accreditation are similar to those of initial accreditation and Include the following a to promote and foster good quality post secondary technical education and training In diploma programmes offered by polytechnics colleges ofagriculture and similar tertiary institutions leading to national awards such as the National Diploma NO and Higher National Diploma HND b to ensure parity of standards in similar diploma programmes offered by polytechnics monotech nics such as colleges of Agriculture and similar tertiary institutions c to assistsuch institutionsand their various departments todevelop and nurture aculture of internal self evaluation and accountabiiity as a means of maintaining the minimum national academic standard set for the programme at the level of training and to improve upon it and d to counsel and assist established and developing institutions and programmes where necessary 2 0 PROGRAMMES THAT QUALIFY FOR RE ACCREDITATION 2 1 Only programmes offered by accredited institutions that have been granted initial accreditation and or subsequent accreditation for a period of not less than five years qualify for re accreditation 3 0 CRITERIA FOR RE ACCREDITING A PROGRAMME The Board in ensuring good quality training parity of standards industrial and professional credibility may wish to satisfy Itselfthat the programme to be e accredited has met its established criteria These criteria are derived from issues relating to academic matters goal and objectives of the programme the curriculum resources avaiiable for teaching the programme satisfactory standard and quality of students work effective management of the depar tment mances on the job ACADEMIC MATTERS 3 1 GOAL AND OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME and employers rating of diplomates perfor The goal and objectives of the programme which are to produce atechnician or technologist in the discipline field or simiiar manpower in business occupations are being met through the totality of activities taking piace in and the sources available to the department offering the programme 2 1
