PRINCESS VIRGINIA 16 - 17<br />
Victor had continued, pouring her another drop of<br />
white wine.<br />
“Actually, I had thought of going to the Pré Saint Didier<br />
thermal baths...” Virginia had stalled, fiddling with the<br />
handle of her fork.<br />
“Oh, I see” he had said, disappointed.<br />
She could have kicked herself a moment later when<br />
Victor had got up from the table to follow an el<strong>de</strong>rly<br />
couple to the bar. She had gone there too after a<br />
while to try the Valdostana coffee with grappa, orange<br />
punch, Génépy and cloves. Victor had shot her an<br />
amused look from the other si<strong>de</strong> of the room.<br />
Virginia stretched lazily. She glanced at her watch on<br />
the nightstand. It said nine o’clock. How long was it<br />
since she’d lazed in bed until that hour? The white telephone<br />
rang discreetly.<br />
“Hello,” said Virginia in surprise, lifting the receiver.<br />
“Good morning. We are leaving at ten sharp for the<br />
excursion,” said Victor’s cheerful voice.<br />
“Yes, yes, I remember... ten o’clock sharp. O.K., just<br />
time to have a shower and get dressed, then I’ll be<br />
down,” blurted Virginia, shooting up in bed in surprise.<br />
“Are you sure you don’t have to go to the spa to be
