Introduction:<br />

The drug used without regard to risks<br />

and without medical advice is regarded<br />

as drug abuse. It is excessive self<br />

adm<strong>in</strong>istration <strong>of</strong> chemicals that change<br />

the user's perception, mood and<br />

consciousness.<br />

ANAESTHETICS<br />

General <strong>in</strong>formation: If a procedure<br />

requires anaesthesia, help the mother to<br />

express her breast milk <strong>in</strong> advance and<br />

store it <strong>in</strong> a refrigerator so that her baby<br />

can be fed her expressed breast milk by<br />

cup while she is undergo<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

operation and recover<strong>in</strong>g from the anaesthesia.<br />

General anaesthetics and oxygen:<br />

Ether: Compatible with breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

halothane: Compatible with breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

ketam<strong>in</strong>e: Compatible with<br />

breast-feed<strong>in</strong>g, nitrous oxide:<br />

Compatible with breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g, oxygen:<br />

Compatible with breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

thiopental: Com-pati-ble with<br />

breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Local anaesthetics<br />

Bupivaca<strong>in</strong>e: Compatible with breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

lidoca<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

Complementary drug: Ephedr<strong>in</strong>e (C):<br />

Compatible with breast-feed<strong>in</strong>g, Monitor<br />

<strong>in</strong>fant for side effects (irritability and<br />

disturbed sleep).<br />

Preoperative medication and sedation<br />

for short term procedures:<br />

Atrop<strong>in</strong>e: Compatible with breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Monitor <strong>in</strong>fant for side effects<br />

(dry<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> secretions, Temperature<br />

elevation and CNS disturbance), chloral<br />

hydrate: Compatible with breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> s<strong>in</strong>gle dose. Monitor <strong>in</strong>fant for<br />

drows<strong>in</strong>ess, diazepam: Compatible with<br />

breast-feed-<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> s<strong>in</strong>gle dose. Avoid<br />

giv<strong>in</strong>g repeated doses, if possible.<br />

Monitor <strong>in</strong>fant for drows<strong>in</strong>ess. Short<br />

act<strong>in</strong>g benzodiaze-p<strong>in</strong>es preferred. Morph<strong>in</strong>e:<br />

Compatible with breast-feed<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

s<strong>in</strong>gle dose. Avoid giv<strong>in</strong>g repeated doses,<br />

if possible. Monitor <strong>in</strong>fant for side<br />

effects (apnoea and bradycardia)<br />

Promethaz<strong>in</strong>e: Com-patible with breast<br />

feed<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> s<strong>in</strong>gle dose. Avoid giv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

repeated doses, if possible. Monitor<br />

<strong>in</strong>fant for drows<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

Analgesics, antipyretics, nonsteroidal<br />

anti <strong>in</strong>flammatory drugs, drugs used<br />

to treat gout and disease modify<strong>in</strong>g<br />

agents used <strong>in</strong> rheumatic disorders:<br />

Non opioids analgesics and<br />

antipyretics and nonsteroidal anti<strong>in</strong>flammatory<br />

drugs:<br />

General <strong>in</strong>formation: ibupr<strong>of</strong>en and<br />

paracetamol have the best documenttation<br />

on safety dur<strong>in</strong>g breast-feed<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Acetyl salicylic acid. Compatible with<br />

breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> occasional doses. Avoid<br />

long-term therapy, if possible. Moni-tor<br />

<strong>in</strong>fant for side effects (hemolysis, prolonged<br />

bleed<strong>in</strong>g time and metabolic<br />

acidosis) ibupr<strong>of</strong>en: Compatible with breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and paracetamol compatible<br />

with breastfeed<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Opioid analgesics: General<br />

Information: S<strong>in</strong>gle doses <strong>of</strong> most
