<strong>New</strong> <strong>manual</strong> on energy efficiency
First reference <strong>manual</strong> for operators of industrial firing plants available in German and soon in English
Bremen, 14 March 2013 – "Simply using energy better – a handbook for practitioners in combustion
technology" is the title of a new reference <strong>manual</strong> for engineers, service technicians and boiler house
personnel. The book provides valuable tips for more efficient plant operation with lower emissions.
The easy-to-follow text and graphics, illustrated comparisons and practical examples ensure that the
book also gives individuals outside the boiler house a detailed insight into the field of energy efficiency.
The publication is available for sale in German since the end of March 2013; the English edition will
follow in summer. The book is published by SAACKE GmbH, a leading global company in the planning,
development and manufacture of combustion technology.
Efficiency levels can be improved by 10 percent
Engineer Stefan Schult is one of the book's authors and an expert in process technology at SAACKE.
He has been researching the topic of firing plants since 2009 and believes that urgent action is
needed, particularly in the area of more efficient energy system solutions: "Around 36 percent of
German oil and gas imports are consumed in firing systems with a nominal power of more than 500
kW. While homeowners meticulously trim consumption in their homes and motorists keep a close
watch on their fuel use, time seems to have stood still in many boiler houses: this wastes a large
amount of valuable energy and is a burden on both the environment and the user's budget." Schult
suggests that the overall efficiency of firing plants can be improved by 10 percent just by combining a
number of smaller optimizations. The advantages resulting from trained personnel and a more efficient
operation are obvious: users from industry, trade or community facilities benefit thanks to the fuel and
electricity cost savings, the higher availability of the plants and the significant reduction in emissions
for the benefit of the environment.
The idea for the book originated from a project in India
The book is not intended as a textbook to be studied at a desk. Rather, it provides a quick reference
when working in the boiler house. "Reading can and should be enjoyable – even for technical topics.
The texts have deliberately been composed in a relaxed and sometimes even humorous style",
explains Schult. The SAACKE book idea was developed during a cooperation project with the German
Federal Ministry for the Environment in which firing plants in India were updated. "In particular, trained
technicians are not always the norm in boiler houses in emerging countries. Besides plant upgrades,
employee training on site also plays a decisive role in order to improve their awareness of the issue of
energy efficiency", says the engineer. This is one of the reasons why the book will also be released in
English in July 2013.
