Track & Field
In 2011, the Javelina track & field program took
another step forward with both the men and women
having All-Americans for the first time since 2006.
The Javelina men were ranked in the USTFCCCA Top
25 all season long and reached the top 10 on two occasions.
The season concluded at the NCAA Division II
national championships hosted by Cal State-Stanislaus
in Turlock, CA. There was a contingent of six athletes
at the national meet and each came home with All-
America honors.
Sophomores Jonathan Woodson and Samantha
Alvarez were the MVP’s for the men’s and women’s
programs, respectively.
Woodson set the school record in the indoor
200-meter dash and earned All-America honors in the
event during the indoor and outdoor seasons. He finished
the year with another All-America honor when
he anchored the 4x100-meter relay team that had a
top time of 39.98. He also earned five all-region citations
during the year.
Alvarez had an unbelievable season that was
punctuated by a national Runner-Up finish in the high
jump. It was the best finish by a Javelina woman at
the outdoor national championships since Patricia
Rivers won the 200-meter dash in 1991. In addition
to her national meet success, she was named the
Lone Star Conference Field Athlete of the Week, three
times, LSC Field Athlete of the Year, LSC All-Academic
Team, First Team Capital One Academic All-District VI
and USTFCCCA All-Region.
The Javelina men’s team capped off a strong season
with a third place finish at the Lone Star Conference
Championships hosted by Tarleton State. It was
the best finish for the team since 2006. Head Coach
Ryan Dall was named the LSC Men’s Coach of the Year
for a second straight season.
The relay team of Anthony Washington, Norman
Thompson, Sergio Rios and Woodson ran a season
best time of 3:11.83 to defeat rival Angelo State for
the first time. Woodson ran a 46-second final leg to
erase the ASU lead and give the team a victory.
The Javelinas did very well in the sprints and
picked up some key points from Kiya Dandena in the
5,000 and 10,000 meters and Trent Hesseltine in the
high jump. Dandena took second place in both events
to give him a total of 16 points in the meet. Hesseltine
was unable to defend his high jump title, but cleared
a career best 6-9.75 to take third place and provisionally
qualify for nationals.
The 4x100-meter relay team of Washington, Tommy
Singletary, Tim Price and Woodson took second
place in a time of 40.62, just .05 behind Abilene Christian.
Washington took third place in the 400 meters in
a time of 48.25. Singletary added a sixth place finish
in the 100 meters in a time of 10.55.
Price and Woodson were the stars on the track
for the team. Price picked up three silver medals after
taking second in the 100 and 200 meters. He ran
season best times of 10.29 to automatically qualify for
nationals in the 100 and a 20.92 in the 200. Woodson
took third in the 200 in a time of 21.15 and fourth in
the 100 with a season best time of 10.47.
The Javelina women finished in eighth place
overall at the LSC Championships after losing at least
11 points due to disqualifications in two events that
would have put the team in sixth place. Angelo State
won the meet for the third straight year with 197
points while Abilene Christian was second with 168.5
and West Texas A&M third with 96.
Alvarez got the day started on the right foot for
the team as she set a personal record in the javelin
with a toss of 126-8. It was good enough for fifth
place in the event. She came back two hours later
and took third in the high jump with a personal best
clearance of 5-8.5 which is only a quarter inch under
the NCAA Division II automatic qualifying mark. She
finished the meet with 18 points to lead the team.
Brittany Stafford was strong in both the 200 and
400-meter dashes taking fourth place in each. In the
200, she improved upon her career best time with
a run of 24.83. In the 400, she went out strong and
finished in 58.66.
The trio of Alvarez, Amy Rabalais and Elvia Lopez
took second, third and fifth, respectively in the pole
vault. Alvarez cleared 11-0.75, Rabalais went 10-6.75
and Lopez had a season best clearance of 9-1.
In the throwing events, Katie Dugie and Christal
Gonzales each picked up points for the Javelinas.
Dugie nabbed fifth place in the shot put with a toss of
44-0.75. Gonzales picked up a sixth place finish in the
hammer throw with a distance of 128-1.
For the season the track & field program received
six all-conference, 18 all-region and six All-America
awards.
