22 2011 2012 Javelina Javelina Softball Track Media & FieldGuide

Ryan Dall enters
his fourth year as the
Texas A&M-Kingsville
head Track & Field and
Cross Country coach.
He is quickly building
a program that can
compete both in the
Lone Star Conference
and nationally. The
Javelina men’s track
program is primed
for a big year in 2012
while the women’s
track and both cross country programs will be much
improved.
Dall was named the LSC Men’s Track & Field Coach
of the Year for the second straight season in 2011
after leading the men to a third place finish at the
conference championships hosted by Tarleton State.
The team was ranked in the top 25 for the entire
season and reached a high of #10 on two occasions.
At the national meet, the team picked up 13 points
to finish in 21st. Jonathan Woodson was a three-time
All-America during the season earning one indoors
and two outdoors. Dall had six men earned allconference
honors and seven earn all-region honors
during the outdoor season. Kiya Dandena broke his
own records in the indoor 3,000 and 5,000 meters
while Woodson set the school record in the indoor
200 meters.
The women’s program is also improving under
Dall, but at a slower pace than the men’s. However,
Samantha Alvarez who finished as the national
runner-up in the high jump turned in the highlight
of the entire 2011 season. Her performance gave
the Javelinas a tie for the most points at the national
meet by any LSC program. Dall had a pair of studentathletes
earned Academic All-District and LSC All-
Academic Team honors.
After a year to recruit, Dall’s team showed
dramatic improvement in 2010 and he was rewarded
by being named the LSC Men’s Track & Field Coach of
the Year. The men’s team was ranked in the top 25 for
most of the season and reached #15 heading into the
National Championships. They had five athletes earn
All-America recognition during the outdoor season
and one during the indoor season.
The men and women each finished in fourth place
at the LSC Championships hosted by Angelo State
in 2010. Dall had three individuals win conference
titles and five named to the all-conference squad.
Two other individuals took LSC All-Academic honors.
During the indoor season Dandena set school records
in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters while C.J. Griggs set the
school record in the triple jump.
In Dall’s first year in charge of the program it was
a trial by fire. He was not hired until right before the
start of the cross country season so he did not have
a chance to recruit. Furthermore, he was charged
with hosting the Lone Star Conference Championship
meets for cross country and track.
In his first year at the helm, Dall had a number of
athletes set personal records. Distance runner Erica
Alvarado set the school record in the indoor 5,000
meters. He had two individuals earn all-conference
honors.
Dall, a 1999 University of Miami graduate, has
extensive experience on the NCAA Division I level
serving as an assistant coach at Duke for five years
and at Florida International University for four years.
Prior to his coaching career, he was the 1995 Big East
Conference indoor and outdoor pole vault champion
and finished in fourth place in the 1999 Big East
decathlon.
At Duke, Dall was responsible for the coaching and
recruiting of male and female sprinters, hurdlers, pole
vaulters and multi-event athletes. He was charged
with the set-up of the Asics Duke Invitational Track
and Field Meet, a 70-plus school invitational. He
coached his athletes to 14 school records, six All-ACC
awards, three IC4A champions, 17 All-IC4A awards,
one ECAC champion and nine All-ECAC awards. He
was the director of the Duke Pole Vault Camp.
In his time at FIU, Dall coached and recruited pole
vaulters, hurdlers, throwers, high jumpers and multievent
athletes. He worked with two All-Americans in
the high jump and javelin, an NCAA Championship
qualifier in the 60-meter hurdles, four conference
champions and over 20 all-conference performers. He
also worked with the cross country team.
Dall is a member of the United States Track and
Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, the
National Pole Vault Coaches Association and the IC4A
Coaches Association. He is Level Two USATF certified
in sprints and hurdles.
short time with the program. In 2010, high jumper Trent Hesseltine and long jumper Connell Davis each
won the Lone Star Conference title with the help of his tutelage. He had had a pair of female pole vaulters
USATF Level I certification in December of 2008.
During his first two years with the Hoggies, Ayala was an outstanding recruiter and worked extensively
Track & Field
In 2011, the Javelina track & field program took
another step forward with both the men and women
having All-Americans for the first time since 2006.
The Javelina men were ranked in the USTFCCCA Top
25 all season long and reached the top 10 on two occasions.
The season concluded at the NCAA Division II
national championships hosted by Cal State-Stanislaus
in Turlock, CA. There was a contingent of six athletes
at the national meet and each came home with All-
America honors.
Sophomores Jonathan Woodson and Samantha
Alvarez were the MVP’s for the men’s and women’s
programs, respectively.
Woodson set the school record in the indoor
200-meter dash and earned All-America honors in the
event during the indoor and outdoor seasons. He finished
the year with another All-America honor when
he anchored the 4x100-meter relay team that had a
top time of 39.98. He also earned five all-region citations
during the year.
Alvarez had an unbelievable season that was
punctuated by a national Runner-Up finish in the high
jump. It was the best finish by a Javelina woman at
the outdoor national championships since Patricia
Rivers won the 200-meter dash in 1991. In addition
to her national meet success, she was named the
Lone Star Conference Field Athlete of the Week, three
times, LSC Field Athlete of the Year, LSC All-Academic
Team, First Team Capital One Academic All-District VI
and USTFCCCA All-Region.
The Javelina men’s team capped off a strong season
with a third place finish at the Lone Star Conference
Championships hosted by Tarleton State. It was
the best finish for the team since 2006. Head Coach
Ryan Dall was named the LSC Men’s Coach of the Year
for a second straight season.
The relay team of Anthony Washington, Norman
Thompson, Sergio Rios and Woodson ran a season
best time of 3:11.83 to defeat rival Angelo State for
the first time. Woodson ran a 46-second final leg to
erase the ASU lead and give the team a victory.
The Javelinas did very well in the sprints and
picked up some key points from Kiya Dandena in the
5,000 and 10,000 meters and Trent Hesseltine in the
high jump. Dandena took second place in both events
to give him a total of 16 points in the meet. Hesseltine
was unable to defend his high jump title, but cleared
a career best 6-9.75 to take third place and provisionally
qualify for nationals.
The 4x100-meter relay team of Washington, Tommy
Singletary, Tim Price and Woodson took second
place in a time of 40.62, just .05 behind Abilene Christian.
Washington took third place in the 400 meters in
a time of 48.25. Singletary added a sixth place finish
in the 100 meters in a time of 10.55.
Price and Woodson were the stars on the track
for the team. Price picked up three silver medals after
taking second in the 100 and 200 meters. He ran
season best times of 10.29 to automatically qualify for
nationals in the 100 and a 20.92 in the 200. Woodson
took third in the 200 in a time of 21.15 and fourth in
the 100 with a season best time of 10.47.
The Javelina women finished in eighth place
overall at the LSC Championships after losing at least
11 points due to disqualifications in two events that
would have put the team in sixth place. Angelo State
won the meet for the third straight year with 197
points while Abilene Christian was second with 168.5
and West Texas A&M third with 96.
Alvarez got the day started on the right foot for
the team as she set a personal record in the javelin
with a toss of 126-8. It was good enough for fifth
place in the event. She came back two hours later
and took third in the high jump with a personal best
clearance of 5-8.5 which is only a quarter inch under
the NCAA Division II automatic qualifying mark. She
finished the meet with 18 points to lead the team.
Brittany Stafford was strong in both the 200 and
400-meter dashes taking fourth place in each. In the
200, she improved upon her career best time with
a run of 24.83. In the 400, she went out strong and
finished in 58.66.
The trio of Alvarez, Amy Rabalais and Elvia Lopez
took second, third and fifth, respectively in the pole
vault. Alvarez cleared 11-0.75, Rabalais went 10-6.75
and Lopez had a season best clearance of 9-1.
In the throwing events, Katie Dugie and Christal
Gonzales each picked up points for the Javelinas.
Dugie nabbed fifth place in the shot put with a toss of
44-0.75. Gonzales picked up a sixth place finish in the
hammer throw with a distance of 128-1.
For the season the track & field program received
six all-conference, 18 all-region and six All-America
awards.

2011 2012 Javelina Javelina Softball Track Media & FieldGuide

Long known as a leader in intercollegiate athletics,
the Lone Star Conference (LSC) is an innovative
athletics conference which aims to provide a superior
competitive experience for member institutions and
to allow for comprehensive development of studentathletes
through academic services and life skills
programming. The LSC continues to build upon its
proud history while intending to be recognized as the
premier NCAA Division
II conference
in the nation.
The league’s
mission is to foster
student participation
and success
among member institutions in Division II intercollegiate
athletics as an integral part of each institution’s
total educational program. The LSC strives for
academic excellence, stresses involvement within the
community, and prides itself in upholding traditions
while continually seeking new opportunities to provide
student-athletes with a unique and superior experience.
The LSC - founded on April 25, 1931 - has developed
from a five-team conference of Texas-based
schools to an 11-member league that spans three
states (Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico). The
conference membership recently changed with the
departure of five Oklahoma schools following the
2010-11 academic year. The league continues to
assist its member institutions in the maintenance of
intercollegiate athletic programs that are compatible
with the highest standards of education and competitive
sports.
Throughout the league’s 80-year history, various
institutions have competed under the LSC banner.
Today, only Texas A&M University-Commerce (then
East Texas State) remains from the original group that
was formed in 1931 when North Texas State, Southwest
Texas State, Sam Houston State and Stephen
F. Austin withdrew from the old Texas Intercollegiate
Athletic Association.
The membership alignment has changed over the
years, with current members having been added in
each of the past six decades. Texas A&M-Kingsville
(formerly Texas A&I) joined in 1954, followed by Angelo
State in 1968 and Abilene Christian in 1973.
Conference membership remained within the Texas
borders until 1984 when Eastern New Mexico was
admitted. Since then, the LSC has grown to include
members from Arkansas and Oklahoma.
Cameron (1988, 1996) was added near the outset
of an expansion phase, while Texas Woman’s (1989)
and previous members West Texas A&M (1986, 1993)
and Tarleton State (1968, 1994) joined the league
soon after.
Midwestern State was admitted early in 1995,
while the University of the Incarnate Word became the
newest member in 2010.
Past members of the LSC include Trinity, Houston,
Lamar, Howard Payne, Sul Ross State, McMurry,
Harding, Ouachita Baptist, Central Oklahoma, East
Central (Okla.), Northeastern State (Okla.), Southeastern
Oklahoma and Southwestern Oklahoma.
With a more streamlined membership in place, the
LSC will do away with divisional formats during the
2011-12 athletic seasons. Dating back to the 1997-98
academic year, the league was formed into two divisions
- North and South - in football, volleyball, basketball,
baseball and softball. Volleyball and baseball
returned to playing without divisions in 2007-08, with
football, basketball and softball set to go back to a
one-conference model this year.
While the LSC has maintained a long-standing
tradition of competitive athletic programs for its members,
many teams and individuals have gone on to
distinguish themselves on the national stage. Entering
2011-12, LSC member institutions have collected 74
NCAA national championships since the league joined
the Division II membership in 1982. Abilene Christian
supplied the most recent additions to that total, capturing
both the men’s indoor and outdoor track and
field championships this past year.
The LSC conducts conference championships
in 16 sports (eight men and eight women). Men’s
championships include football, soccer, cross country,
basketball, baseball, track and field, tennis and golf.
Women’s titles are determined in volleyball, soccer,
Javelinas Win LSC SAAC Cup, Again
Student-athletes and administrators from all eleven Lone Star Conference member institutions met in Kingsville, Texas, July
29-31, for the league’s sixth annual Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Summer Retreat). At a dinner banquet on Friday
night, Texas A&M-Kingsville was awarded the LSC SAAC Cup for a second straight year.
The LSC SAAC Cup was awarded to Texas A&M-Kingsville for their efforts during 2010-11. The purpose of the cup is to encourage
participation in conference SAAC initiatives. The Javelinas earned the most points of any school throughout the year to earn
the third-ever cup along with customized t-shirts. The Javelinas tallied 16,556 points, over 4,000 more than last year. Abilene
Christian (11,608) and West Texas A&M (9,667) rounded out the top three schools. The award is based on involvement in six categories:
LSC SAAC meetings, Campus SAAC meetings, Make-A-Wish, Community Service Month, other community service and the
NCAA Legislative grid.
The three-day event, which took place on the campus of Texas A&M-Kingsville, is intended to help improve communication
amongst LSC SAAC groups and to help energize student-athletes with ideas and “best practices” to be implemented during the
academic year.
“We are very proud of our SAAC group,” said A&M-Kingsville Director of Athletics Kenneth Oliver. “They do an outstanding
job of getting their teammates involved in community service events throughout the year and this year they collected enough
money to grant a wish to a child in South Texas.”
The participants arrived on Friday and met before having dinner, which was hosted by Dr. Steven Tallant, President of A&M-
Kingsville, at Memorial Student Union Building due to possible inclement weather.
The LSC SAAC group put together a community service event at the Student Recreation Center on Saturday morning. Then,
they were able to tour the King Ranch before getting a chance to hit the beach in Corpus Christi.
The event concluded on Sunday with meetings. Topics discussed during the retreat included NCAA SAAC, community service
ideas, the LSC tagline, LSC SAAC Cup and how to be a good leader on and off campus.
Ten of the LSC’s 11 member institutions were represented at the meeting. The student-athletes who attended the Summer
Retreat were Abilene Christian’s Erin Gilliland, Brent Schroeder and David Pillen; Angelo State’s Kelsey Merritt and Alvin Johnson;
Cameron’s Alexis Williams and Sharna Hoosier; Incarnate Word’s Danielle Suarez and Stephen Lucke; Midwestern State’s
Megan Richardson; Tarleton’s Flynn Harrell and Hayden Eubanks; A&M-Commerce’s Devon Herrman and Larry Horn, Jr.; A&M-
Kingsville’s Sherman Batiste, Beth Etter, Shonta Dobbins and Robert Guzman; Texas Woman’s Jordan Readicker and Chaynade
Knowles; and West Texas A&M’s Erika Dupree and Thomas Harris.
Also attending as advisors were ACU’s Ann Varner, ASU’s Stacy Duffell; CU’s Michelle Warner, UIW’s Mark Papich and Stacy
Nordquist, MSU’s Kurt Portmann, Tarleton’s Mary Domine-Schindler, A&M-C’s Judy Sackfield, TAMUK’s Amanda Knight, TWU’s
Charolette Hunt and WTAMU’s Courtney Lee.
over $500,000 facility improvements.
In his second year, Oliver once again guided the department to
winning the LSC’s Best Community Engagement Award and LSC SAAC
Cup. The department completed over sixty (60) community service and
engagement projects, forty (40) percent of the student-athletes had a
grade point average of 3.0 or higher with an department average of 2.7
and finished sixty-two (62) positions higher in the NACDA cup standings
than in 2010. He hired the school’s first women’s tennis coach and
full-time assistant softball coach. He oversaw a pair of top 10 nationally
ranked programs and three teams ranked nationally. He’s led the
athletic department to an all-time high in dollars raised totaling over
$575,000 through corporate sponsors and Javelina Club members for
the second straight consecutive year. He signed a multi-year radio deal
with EXA 95.1 that will expand the Javelin Radio Network into the Rio
Grande Valley and launch the new www.javelinaathletics.com web-site.
Under his leadership multiple athletic facilities projects are in the process
of being completed.
During his tenure at Central Methodist University he made a big
impact on Eagle Athletics. He led the “Campaign for Eagle Athletics,” a
$5.2 million enhancement project to improve all of the CMU athletic
facilities. He increased athletic scholarships, created the Champions
of Character Player’s Council, hired a Champions of Character Coach,
full-time sports information director, hired a full-time certified strength
and conditioning coach, added men’s and women’s golf, increased the
number of coaches in each of the athletic programs and increased the
marketing efforts for Eagle Athletics. In addition, he led the CMU Ath-
letic Department to its first ever Heart of America Athletic Conference
Sportsman Trophy in 2007-08. Every athletic program finished higher
in the conference in 2007-08 than in the previous year and during the
2008-09 year 10 out of 15 athletic programs finished in the top half of
the conference and seven finished in the top 3 in the conference. In
addition, the overall grade point averages of both the men and women
athletes increased each year.
Oliver began his professional tenure at CMU in January 1999, when
he accepted the position of recruiting coordinator, assistant football/
track coach and instructor of physical education. Through his tenure at
CMU, Oliver was honored for his work ethic and loyalty to Central. From
2001-05 he held the position of Dean of Students while still coaching
for the Eagle football team. On July 1, 2005, Oliver was promoted to
Vice-President of Campus Life with direct responsibility for admissions/
enrollment, student affairs and athletics. In addition to being the Vice-
President of Campus Life/Dean of Students, he also held the position of
helped CMU have the largest enrollment in school history for four consecutive
years. He also served on the National Administrative Council of
the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.
During Oliver’s coaching career, he coached seven (7) different
All-Americans and eight (8) Academic All-Americans. His football special
teams and defensive units hold a number of CMU and NAIA records. His
2004 defensive unit is one of the best in CMU history and was nationally
rated as one of the best defenses in 2004. That defensive unit had four
All-Americans, led the nation in interceptions (33), takeaways (49) and
turnover margin (+2.5 a game), was fourth in the nation for punt returns
(14.6 yards per return) and set numerous school records. In 2003, the
Heart of America Athletic Conference selected Oliver to serve as the
defensive coordinator in the Heartland Classic Bowl Game in which the
team from the HAAC defeated the team from the Great Plains Athletic
Conference, 34-0. His 1999 special teams unit lead the nation in kickoff
return average, set the NAIA return yardage record and produced an
NAIA All-American. His 2000 and 2002 women’s golf teams finished
fourth in the NAIA region V, which is the best in CMU history.
Prior to CMU, Oliver was the assistant head football coach/defensive
coordinator, head track coach and director of student-athlete
retention at William Penn University. He also coached at Fort Scott
Community College where he was the defensive/recruiting coordinator,
