[def] One <strong>of</strong> a group <strong>of</strong> terms which designate the same concept but from different<br />

po<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>of</strong> view <strong>of</strong> conceptualisation.<br />

Note: Because quasi synonyms are <strong>used</strong> <strong>in</strong> different communicative situations, they<br />

are not <strong>in</strong>terchangeable <strong>in</strong> all utterances belong<strong>in</strong>g to a s<strong>in</strong>gle subject field.<br />

Types <strong>of</strong> quasi synonyms:<br />

<strong>of</strong> level: mad cow disease = spongeiform encephalomielitis<br />

geographical: (US) gasol<strong>in</strong>e = (UK) petrol<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional: ferric oxide = jeweller’s rouge<br />

popular/scientific: salt = sodium chloride<br />
