Note: In term<strong>in</strong>ology, def<strong>in</strong>itions are fixations <strong>of</strong> a concept by reference to other<br />

concepts and characteristics. They are expressed <strong>in</strong> the form <strong>of</strong> equations with<br />

the term <strong>of</strong> the concept to be def<strong>in</strong>ed on the left-hand side and usually, a s<strong>in</strong>gle<br />

noun phrase on the right-hand side. Because it is customary to express the<br />

def<strong>in</strong>ition <strong>in</strong> a s<strong>in</strong>gle sentence, this noun phrase may be quite complex.<br />

Def<strong>in</strong>itions can be m<strong>in</strong>imal, i.e., give only as much <strong>in</strong>formation as is required<br />

to differenciate the concept clearly from others <strong>in</strong> the same doma<strong>in</strong>. Other<br />

def<strong>in</strong>itions are exhaustive and provide what can be described as encyclopedic<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation.<br />
