number, a registration package will be sent to you 2 to 3 weeks before the start of registration, which
will provide you with all the information you need to register. In the case of a master's and/or doctoral
student, a registration package will be sent to you as soon as possible.

Dear Prospective Student
Welcome to Unisa.
Unisa is an internationally accredited open distance learning institution. This means that your learning will be facilitated from a distance through
various media, including paper-based learning materials, electronic and online systems, contact classes and tutorials.
The considerable advantage of the distance mode of tuition is that it will allow you to remain employed while still being in the enviable position of
improving yourself through further studies.
By joining Unisa, you will become one of about 280 000 students who register at Unisa each year.
Identifying Unisa as your university of choice for your 2010 studies provides you with a wide choice of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
Primarily, the Unisa tuition model at undergraduate level is semester based, which gives you the flexibility to cover your studies over two semesters
per year. At postgraduate level, Unisa offers both research and structured coursework programmes. For undergraduate students requiring print-based
study materials, Unisa has an agreement with a team of courier companies which will deliver your study material directly to you at no additional cost.
You may contact the university through the Unisa Contact Centre (0861 670 411) or visit one of the 26 regional offices countrywide. The Unisa
website (www.unisa.ac.za) will also enable you to access Unisa information and register, pay your fees and submit assignments.

1 IS UNISA FOR ME?
What is open distance learning?
Unisa is a comprehensive university which offers a combination of career-oriented modules (usually associated with a university of technology, whose
programmes prepare students for the world of work) and formative academic programmes (typically linked to a traditional university). We therefore
offer a wide range of study choices, from certificate programmes, to three and four-year degrees and diplomas. Postgraduate studies are offered up
to doctoral level.
Unisa follows an open distance learning (ODL) model of tuition. But what does this mean for you as a student?

You will not attend classes. This means that you will need to manage your time and your studies, so that you can spend an hour or two on
each module per day. Although you will use your study materials at home, you may seek contact with other students, lecturers and counsellors,
as necessary.
You will receive comprehensive study guides and tutorial letters for each module, which will help you to master your study material and give
direction to your studies. You should use your study guides together with the prescribed and recommended books, which you may need
to purchase for certain modules. You may also receive CDs or DVDs as part of your study package. All your study material will also be available
on myUnisa, the online student portal.
You will need to submit at least one compulsory assignment and possibly some additional assignments per module. Your lecturers will mark
your assignments, add their comments and then return them to you. Your lecturers will also send you follow-up tutorial letters, which will look
at the problems you and other students experienced when completing the assignments.
You will write examinations at the end of the semester/year and can pass the module based on how well you did in the examination and the
assignment(s). Unisa offers examination centres throughout South Africa and abroad.

What support can I expect from Unisa?
Unisa provides different forms of support and you are welcome to choose the type of support that best suits your needs.
When you register for a module, you will receive Tutorial letter 101 as part of your study package. This tutorial letter will provide you with your
lecturers’ contact details, as well as information on how and when to contact them. Depending on the module, your lecturers may present discussion
classes at various centres around the country. Your lecturers will inform you of these events by means of tutorial letters. Unisa also offers some
contact classes via satellite. Contact sessions presented by lecturers will be broadcast to centres all over South Africa.
The Tutorial Support Programme is an additional academic support service offered by Unisa. Students, particularly first and second-year students, may
attend weekly face-to-face tutorials led by qualified tutors recommended by the colleges and appointed by Unisa. These tutorial classes are offered
at various Unisa centres. Should you wish to form a study group, you may obtain a list of fellow students from the university once you have registered.
Unisa has an online student portal, called myUnisa, which is available to all registered students. This portal, which consists of a public area and a
student-specific password-protected area, provides access via the internet to Unisa’s administrative and academic services. By using myUnisa, you will,
for example, be able to view your student account and academic record, join an online discussion forum, download study material and even submit
your assignments.
Unisa also has excellent library facilities. The main library is situated on the Muckleneuk campus, but there are regional libraries across South Africa

and arrangements have been made with public libraries in virtually every town and city in South Africa. Courier services are available to ensure that
you have access to library material wherever you are.
The Department of Student Affairs and the Office of the Dean of Students are also available to assist students.
At Unisa, we firmly believe that no matter where a student is located geographically, there should be no difference in the level and quality of support
services available. To ensure service consistency to students across South Africa, we have created five regions, namely Gauteng, Cape Coastal,
KwaZulu-Natal, Midlands and North Eastern. For the benefit of students outside South Africa, we have partnerships with other higher education
institutions, which make their facilities available to Unisa students.
How is Unisa different from other universities?
Students often ask if Unisa is a real university and the answer is “yes”. The biggest difference between Unisa and other universities is how we teach.

I am a foreign student. May I study through Unisa?
We welcome students from all over the world. All applicants must, however, comply with the appropriate statutory and admission requirements of
the university. Please see the details for admission to study later on in this booklet. All applicants must also have an acceptable level of competence in
writing, reading, speaking and understanding English.
What support does Unisa offer students with disabilities?
Unisa has many support facilities for students with disabilities. In fact, we have a dedicated support centre for these students known as the Advocacy
and Resource Centre for Students with Disabilities (ARCSWid). Through this centre, students with disabilities have access to a wide range of services,
including assistance with registration, study material in alternative formats (eg Braille service, audiotapes, print enlargement), academic support, special
examination arrangements, information about financial assistance (eg bursary assistance) and sign language interpretation services.
Are Unisa’s qualifications recognised nationally and internationally?
Unisa operates in accordance with the Higher Education Act 101 of 1997, as amended. It is recognised by the South African Department of
Education (DoE), is accredited by the South African Council on Higher Education (CHE) and all its qualifications are registered with the South African
Qualifications Authority (SAQA).
We suggest that you enquire from the specific foreign country/university whether Unisa’s qualifications are accredited/recognised.
Can I get credit for courses I have done at other institutions? And what about my life experiences and courses I did through my
work?
If you have completed formal courses at another accredited university or university of technology, you can apply for exemption from study units
already passed (conditions apply); you must, however, do this as part of the application process before you register.
If you apply for recognition of prior learning (RPL), you will be required to include a motivation as part of your application documentation. For this,
you will need to match your prior learning to the learning outcomes of the relevant subjects for which you are requesting RPL credits, advanced
standing or access.
What does it cost to study through Unisa?
In 2009, undergraduate modules cost between R755 and R875. Study fees increase by approximately 10% per annum.
What will my registration fee per module pay for?
Your registration fee will pay for the module for which you have registered, your examination (excluding supplementary, special and aegrotat exams)
and your study material. You will, however, need to buy your prescribed books separately at one of the approved Unisa booksellers.
What financial aid is available to Unisa students?
Financial assistance for academically deserving and financially needy students is available through the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS)
and through Edu-Loan. Both the NSFAS and Edu-Loan provide financial assistance in the form of student loans, which must be repaid.

Where do I begin?
Making an informed career decision involves the following components:
You and the information that you gather does not stand alone - you are within a specific social and economic environment that will also influence
your decisions. For example, your family might insist that you study law while you want to be an artist, or you desperately want to work with nongovermental
organisations but you are worried about the limited earning potential.
Some other terms explained
Career Your career is the different paths you follow and what you do with the choices you made. This can be a series of jobs or
occupations that you have throughout your life.
Career decision Your career is a dynamic process, meaning that it is always changing. You are therefore constantly making decision with regard to
your career that will influence your career path. Have you chosen to study accounting, for example, because you want to earn a lot of
money or have you chosen to study psychology because you want to help people? Do you want to study further in order to start a new
profession, or do you complete in-house training courses to advance in your current profession?
Occupation The principal activity in your life that you do to earn money, for example: accounting, psychology, science or human
resources.
Job How you spend your time and earn money, for example: management accountant, clinical psychologist, microbiologist or
human resource manager.
A profession is… The application of specialised training and knowledge to provide a service to clients. The activities of professionals are
usually governed by a professional organisation that enforces ethical and professional guidelines, for example: social work,
teaching, psychology, accounting and auditing, architecture, medical professions and engineering.

Many graduates follow careers that do not seem to have anything to do with their chosen majors/areas of specialisation.

and experience --- will determine whether or not you are selected for a position.

3 DO I QUALIFY TO STUDY THROUGH UNISA?
As a South African public university, there are minimum statutory admission requirements for specific programmes. In addition to this, Senate may
set further requirements for admission to certain programmes. The following are the minimum statutory admission requirements. Please contact the
university if you are unsure whether or not you qualify for admission to the qualification of your choice.
Bachelor’s degree
To be registered for a degree, a student must hold one of the following certificates:
a) National Senior Certificate with entry level: Degree
b) A senior certificate with matriculation or university admission endorsement (exemption)
c) A certificate of full or conditional exemption issued by the Matriculation Board of Higher Education South Africa (HESA)
Students must also comply with any additional requirements that may be set by Senate.
Bachelor of Technology degrees
To be registered for this degree, a student must hold an applicable National Diploma and comply with any other additional requirements as set by
Senate.
National Diplomas
To be registered for a diploma, a student must:
a) Hold a National Senior Certificate with entry level: Diploma/Degree; or
b) Hold a senior or school leaving certificate with or without a matriculation exemption/endorsement, but with at least 5 subjects on Higher and/
or Standard Grade; or
c) Qualify for a certificate of full or conditional exemption issued by the Matriculation Board of Higher Education South Africa (HESA); or
d) Hold a Std 8/Grade 10, be 23 years and older, and have 3 years work experience

Non-degree purpose (NDP)
To be registered for any module for non-degree purposes, a student must:

A step-by-step overview of whether or not you qualify for admission to degree and/or diploma studies at Unisa
If you do not have an exemption certificate, please enquire at the university (Access and Matriculation Exemption Office) about whether you qualify
for any of the other types of exemption certificates, for example: on the grounds of foreign or post-school qualifications obtained and/or mature age.
An application for such an exemption certificate must be submitted to the university which, upon finalisation of the application, will forward it to the
Matriculation Board. The certificate will then be issued, if approved by the Board. In the case where a certificate of conditional exemption is issued, a
student will be required to renew such a certificate when it lapses. In order to confirm whether you possibly qualify for conditional exemption, please

4 HOW DO I APPLY TO STUDY THROUGH UNISA?
I want to study at Unisa. What must I do?
You will have to check if Unisa offers the programme you wish to study and then apply to the university within the application period for admission to
that programme. All new students, that is, students who have not been registered with Unisa for formal study, must apply to study through Unisa. The
application process is a pre-registration process. You will still have to go through the registration process at a later stage.
Why must I apply to study?
The application process enables the university to evaluate whether or not you meet the requirements to be allowed to study at Unisa. If you do not
apply to study, this evaluation process cannot take place and you will not be able to register to study through Unisa. The university also performs other
administrative tasks related to your application which, should your application be successful, will enable you to register during the registration period.

Apply directly at Unisa.

How do I apply?
You may apply online at www.unisa.ac.za or by completing and submitting the application form to Unisa by post or fax. The application form can be
found in the centrefold of this booklet.
How do I know what to apply for?
Please refer to the section on Unisa programmes later in this book, as this will give you an indication of the programmes that Unisa will be offering
in 2010. You may only apply for programmes contained in this book. Please note that if a programme is not included in this booklet, it is very unlikely
that Unisa offers such a programme for new applicants. You may, however, contact the Unisa Contact Centre for confirmation of this.
What must I send with my application?
The check list on the application form and on the inside front cover will indicate which supporting documents you need to submit with your
application form.
Do I have to pay a fee to apply at Unisa?
Yes, the application fee is R150,00. This fee is non-refundable even if you decide not to study through Unisa or do not qualify for admission to Unisa.
How should I pay the application fee?
You may submit postal orders made out in favour of Unisa to the value of R150,00 with your application. If you apply online, you will receive a
reference number against which to make an online credit card payment. You may also pay at any Absa branch after you have received the reference
number from Unisa. International applicants may pay by credit card or by means of Swift payment (Beneficiary: University of South Africa; Absa Bank;
Account number: 404 874 6711; Branch: Sunnyside, 630 345; Swift code: ABSAZAJJ). Please attach proof of payment for Swift payments.
How should I send documents to Unisa?
You may attach electronic copies if applying online. If posting your application, then include the applicable documents as part of the application in the
pre-addressed enclosed envelope. Please attach postage when using this envelope. If faxing, fax to 012 429 8116.

4 HOW DO I APPLY TO STUDY AT UNISA?

What will happen after I submit my application?
Unisa will send you a reference number. Please use this reference number when paying your application fee (if not paid initially) and when making
any enquiries regarding your application.
I am writing Grade 12 exams this year. When must I apply?
You must still apply by the stipulated application dates. Your admission status will, however, only be confirmed upon receipt of your final NSC results.
Your application is mearly an indication of your intention to consider Unisa as one of your university choices. Your application does not bind you to
study through Unisa.
I am currently studying at another institution. Must I apply now or only when my results are available?
If you intend studying through Unisa, you MUST apply during the applicable application period, even if you are awaiting results from your other
institution.
I am currently registered for a Short Learning Programme (eg Certificate/Advanced Certificate programme) at Unisa, but want to
register for formal studies (eg National Diploma, undergraduate degree, postgraduate studies) next year. Do I have to apply as
well?
Yes, you must apply, as you will have to be evaluated for admission purposes for formal studies. You will also receive a unique reference number for
formal studies.
I studied through Unisa before but cannot remember my student number. Must I now apply to study at Unisa again?
Please contact the Unisa Contact Centre or visit one of Unisa’s regional centres BEFORE the closing date so that Unisa staff members can look up
your student number for you and confirm whether or not you need to apply.
Can I cancel my application later on? How do I do that?
You cannot cancel your application. Howeve, if we do not receive the application fee and supporting documents, we will not be able to finalise your
application. You will then have to reapply again if you wish to pursue studies at Unisa in the future.

6 Unisa will assess your application.
7 IIf you still need to pay the application fee or make any other enquiries with regard to your application, Unisa will send you a
reference number that you must use for these purposes.
8 If you have met all the requirements for the application phase and you have been issued with a student number, a registration
package will be sent to you 2 to 3 weeks before the start of registration, which will provide you with all the information
you need to register. In the case of a master’s and/or doctoral student, a registration package will be sent to you as soon as
possible.
When is my application finalised?
Your application will be finalised after you have submitted your application form, paid the application fee, submitted the
appropriate documents and received a student number from Unisa.
