28. FAMILY STAPHYLINIDAE<br />

The rove beetles <strong>and</strong> allies<br />

Checked <strong>and</strong> Reviewed by J. H. Frank, April,<br />

2001; A.F. Newt<strong>on</strong>, March <strong>and</strong> July, 2002.<br />

This is a very large family <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> mostly predatory<br />

beetles. The following list has been mostly drawn<br />

from Blackwelder (1943), <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> accuracy <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> identificati<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> distributi<strong>on</strong> for many species that<br />

have not been recently revised may be highly suspect.<br />

The Blackwelder collecti<strong>on</strong> is in Washingt<strong>on</strong>,<br />

<strong>and</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tains many misidentificati<strong>on</strong>s. While <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

North American fauna is now becoming well studied,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> West Indian fauna is still very poorly known.<br />

Frank (1986) provided a checklist for Florida. The<br />

higher classificati<strong>on</strong> follows that <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lawrence <strong>and</strong><br />

Newt<strong>on</strong> (1995). Many species described by Bierig<br />

may need lectotypes designated. The large <strong>and</strong> important<br />

Bierig collecti<strong>on</strong> is now at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Field Mu-<br />

seum, Chicago <strong>and</strong> it c<strong>on</strong>tains many additi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Cuba</str<strong>on</strong>g>n specimens that are unidentified or <str<strong>on</strong>g>with</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

manuscript names. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cuba</str<strong>on</strong>g>n records <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> species in this<br />

museum are listed here, from data provided by A.<br />

F. Newt<strong>on</strong>, but identificati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong>/or distributi<strong>on</strong>s<br />

need to be c<strong>on</strong>firmed. Full syn<strong>on</strong>ym lists <strong>and</strong> distributi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

details are in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> m<strong>on</strong>umental catalogue<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Herman (2001), but this does not cover <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> subfamilies<br />

Aleocharinae, Paederinae, Scaphidiinae<br />

<strong>and</strong> Pselaphinae. Most genera in <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cuba</str<strong>on</strong>g> are covered<br />

in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> keys to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Mexican <strong>and</strong> Central American<br />

fauna in Navarrete et al. (2002).<br />

SUBFAMILY PSELAPHINAE<br />

The ant-like beetles<br />

Reviewed by D. Ch<strong>and</strong>ler, March, 2001<br />

These small beetles live in forest leaf litter <strong>and</strong><br />

feed <strong>on</strong> mites, Collembola, <strong>and</strong> o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r small invertebrates.<br />

The <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cuba</str<strong>on</strong>g>n fauna is very poorly known. Park<br />

et al. (1976) is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last treatment <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cuba</str<strong>on</strong>g>n fauna.<br />

This group is c<strong>on</strong>sidered to be a subfamily <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Staphylinidae by Newt<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> Thayer (1995) <strong>and</strong><br />

Lawrence <strong>and</strong> Newt<strong>on</strong> (1995). We use here <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir<br />
