This family occurs in nor<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rn Europe, northwestern<br />

North America, <strong>and</strong> China. Adults may<br />

come to birch sap, <strong>and</strong> larvae may be in soil soaked<br />

in birch sap.<br />

This family occurs in México, Japan, Siberia,<br />

<strong>and</strong> India. Adults <strong>and</strong> larvae are predators under<br />

rotted bark, or in rotted cactus.<br />

These live in a variety <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> habitats <strong>and</strong> are predators<br />

as adults or larvae. They may be predators <strong>on</strong><br />

wood-boring beetles, <strong>on</strong> maggots in carri<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

dung, <strong>and</strong> some are myrmecophiles. Decou <strong>and</strong><br />

Thér<strong>on</strong>d (1977) give <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cuba</str<strong>on</strong>g>n records <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> species collected<br />

<strong>and</strong> Johns<strong>on</strong> et al. 1991. The higher classificati<strong>on</strong><br />

follows Mazur (2001), which c<strong>on</strong>tains a key for identificati<strong>on</strong><br />
