10. FAMILY CARABIDAE<br />

The ground beetles<br />

Reviewed by G. E. Ball, March, 2001<br />

These are mostly active predators <strong>on</strong> plant surfaces,<br />

<strong>and</strong> in litter. Some Harpalini are phytophagous.<br />

The larvae are usually liquid-feeding predators.<br />

Larvae <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lebiini <strong>and</strong> Brachininae are ectoparasitic.<br />

The main reference <strong>and</strong> introducti<strong>on</strong> to<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> West Indian carabid fauna is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> list by Erwin<br />

<strong>and</strong> Sims (1984). This is a most important paper<br />

because it gives keys to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> genera known in <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cuba</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

Keys to all Neotropical genera are in Reichardt<br />

(1977). Darlingt<strong>on</strong> (1937) is an itemizati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cuba</str<strong>on</strong>g>n<br />

carabids known to him, <strong>and</strong> includes several<br />

keys for identificati<strong>on</strong>. Mateu (1977) has provided<br />

a list <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> carabids found in <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cuba</str<strong>on</strong>g>n caves, but n<strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> species are cave limited (Peck et al. 1998). Valdés<br />

(1999) provides a list <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cuba</str<strong>on</strong>g>n Cicindelinae. The<br />

higher classificati<strong>on</strong> used here follows that in<br />

Bousquet <strong>and</strong> Larochelle (1993). Ball (1992a) provides<br />

an excellent framework by which to analyze<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> entire <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cuba</str<strong>on</strong>g>n carabid beetle fauna.<br />
