167. FAMILY CURCULIONIDAE<br />

The snout beetles or weevils<br />

Reviewed by R.S. Anders<strong>on</strong> July 1994<br />

This is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> largest <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> all beetle families. Habits<br />

are variable, but most species feed as larvae in rotting<br />

wood <strong>and</strong> cambium, or <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> roots, stems, flowers,<br />

<strong>and</strong> seeds <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> living plants. Many larvae occur<br />

in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> soil <strong>and</strong> are root feeders. Some species are<br />

ec<strong>on</strong>omic pests <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> grain, rice, cott<strong>on</strong>, etc. O’Brien<br />

<strong>and</strong> Wibmer (1982) is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> primary source for this<br />

list. Records for species presence in <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cuba</str<strong>on</strong>g> which<br />

are listed <str<strong>on</strong>g>with</str<strong>on</strong>g>out supporting data are from O’Brien<br />

<strong>and</strong> Wibmer (1982). The bark <strong>and</strong> ambrosia beetles<br />

(Scolytinae <strong>and</strong> Platypodinae) have traditi<strong>on</strong>ally<br />

been ranked as families. An alternative higher classificati<strong>on</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this group is that <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Al<strong>on</strong>so-Zarazaga<br />

<strong>and</strong> Lyal (1999) which uses additi<strong>on</strong>al family units,<br />

<strong>and</strong> in which Scolytidae <strong>and</strong> Platypodidae are used<br />

as families.<br />
