The darkling beetles<br />

This is a large <strong>and</strong> comm<strong>on</strong> family. They generally<br />

occur in arid areas <strong>and</strong> feed <strong>on</strong> a variety <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

materials as scavengers. Larvae occur in soil, litter,<br />

dead wood, or fungi. Some occur in caves <strong>and</strong><br />

some are pests <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> stored products or agriculture<br />

(La Rosa et al. 1987, Vasquez 1986). The cave faunas<br />

have been studied by Ardoin (1977a, 1977b),<br />

<strong>and</strong> Peck et al. (1999) The higher categories <strong>and</strong><br />

genera are here arranged according to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>cepts<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> relati<strong>on</strong>ships used by Aalbu et al. in Arnett et al.<br />

(2002). Marcuzzi (1984, 1998) is a catalogue <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Tenebri<strong>on</strong>idae (s.str.) <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Antilles <strong>and</strong> a supplement<br />

to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> catalogue. In an unpublished checklist,<br />

Garrido <strong>and</strong> Gutierrez list 125 species for <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cuba</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

(excluding Lagriinae <strong>and</strong> Alleculinae), <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> which 66<br />

are endemic species, figures which are now out <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

date. They give additi<strong>on</strong>al distributi<strong>on</strong>al data <str<strong>on</strong>g>with</str<strong>on</strong>g>in<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Cuba</str<strong>on</strong>g>, based up<strong>on</strong> material in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Garrido collecti<strong>on</strong><br />

in Havana.<br />
